Postgraduate Taught

Postgraduate Taught refers to taught degrees with a set amount of contact time with the course providers. This takes the form of seminars, tutorials and lectures.

Taught programmes can lead to the award of:

  • Postgraduate Diplomas and Certificates
  • Masters degrees

Duration of study

  • Taught Masters degrees usually last for one year (full-time study) and the final assessment is often based on the submission of a research-based dissertation.
  • Most Postgraduate Diplomas last for nine months full-time.
  • Postgraduate Certificates generally last for four to five months full-time.

Assessment

Assessment of taught courses is by examination or coursework (or a combination of both) depending on the requirements of the programme of study.

The structure of Taught Masters programmes varies but progress through the different stages (e.g. from the taught courses to the dissertation stage) depends on satisfactory performance in assessment.

A candidate who does not do well enough in this assessment or who chooses not to proceed to the next stage of the programme, but who otherwise attains a satisfactory standard, may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate.

Generally, a candidate must complete minimum credits as follows:

  • For the award of a Postgraduate Diploma: 120 credits of taught courses
  • For the award of a Postgraduate Certificate: 60 credits of taught courses

Please note:

Full details of the requirements for the award of Postgraduate Taught degrees are given in the relevant University regulations. A student admitted onto a programme leading to an award must also follow the instructions issued on behalf of the relevant School and be aware of the content of the Programme Document (often referred to as the Programme or ‘Course' Handbook) which will contain further details on the Programme including, in some cases, further requirements associated with the award.

Postgraduate Research

Postgraduate Research degrees can generally be divided into:

  • Research Masters degrees
  • Doctorates

Postgraduate Research degrees are often aimed at people who already have a Masters degree.

The University offers Postgraduate Research degrees of various durations.

Students undertake a research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor and, unlike a postgraduate degree by coursework and dissertation, there are no formal lectures or seminars and work is not formally examined until after the final thesis is submitted.

The University has developed a code of practice for postgraduate research degrees which sets out the minimum standards that research students can expect of the University and makes clear the responsibilities of all parties involved in a research student’s experience.

Join our postgraduate community and you will:

  • be taught by academics who are leading experts in their disciplines.
  • benefit from our vast information resources and state-of-the-art equipment. For example, Glasgow boasts one of the largest university libraries in the UK with over 800 student PCs and extremely convenient opening hours - open 361 days of the year from 07:15-02:00.
  • discover a way of learning that develops your critical thinking, analytical abilities and curiosity.

Studying at Glasgow

  • Over 5,000 students are currently registered for taught degrees.
  • The University is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK research universities.

There has been a chair of natural philosophy at the University since 1727 although the subject would have been taught in some form even before this. The most famous incumbent of this position was William Thompson, later knighted Baron Kelvin of Largs. He had a huge influence in many fields including in experimental physics research (the unit of absolute temperature is named Kelvin after him), in technology including intercontinental communication aiding the laying of the first telegraph cables between Britain and the USA, and in various areas related to shipping navigation. He also made vital steps forward in physics education and introduced practical laboratory-based teaching at Glasgow.

Since his time, the school has grown massively and is now one of the leading Physics and Astronomy schools in the UK, both for undergraduate teaching and for cutting edge research in a wider variety of fields.

The Online Application Form is accessed by clicking ‘Apply Now’ on our individual course web pages. You can use our Course Finder to find the page of the course you wish to apply to. If you are making multiple applications, this needs to be done for each application. The first time you create an online application you log in using your email address and create a password at this stage.

      Providing the references

To complete your application we will need one reference.

There are two options for you to submit your reference as part of your application. You can upload a document as part of your application or you can enter your referee’s contact details and we will contact them to request a reference.

Option 1 – Uploading as part of the application form

Your reference should be on an official headed paper. This should also be signed by the referee. You can then upload this via the Online Application form with the rest of your documents to complete the application process.

Please be aware that documents must not exceed 5MB in size and therefore you may have to upload your documents separately. The online system allows you to upload supporting documents only in PDF format.

Option 2 – Entering contact details as part of the application form

If you enter your referee’s contact details including email on the application form we will email them requesting they submit a reference once you have submitted the application form. When the referee responds and sends a reference you will be sent an email to confirm the university has received this.

      After submitting your application form

You must submit details of one reference during your application form. If you need to submit another reference after you have submitted your application form (for example your referee is now unable to provide you with a reference) you must do this through the Applicant Self Service uploading documents function.

If after you have submitted your application you required to upload a new reference and your referees would prefer to provide confidential references direct to the University then we can also accept the reference by email, from the referee’s official university or business email account to [email protected]. We will then add these to your application.

      Applying online

Please note that there are two steps to the online application:

Step 1: Register and complete an application and any other subsequent applications.

Step 2: Once you have completed an application then you can access Applicant Self Service through the Online Application to:

      • check the status of your application
      • upload any additional documents
      • update your personal details
      • accept any offers you receive
