Introduction

The University of Kent’s Centre for Music and Audio Technology (CMAT) houses three undergraduate degree programmes in Music. These cutting-edge courses were created to meet the needs of current students and the expectations of the music industry and to reflect the University’s research culture. Studying at CMAT will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to launch your career in the music industry.

CMAT is based at an inspirational waterfront environment in the Historic Dockyard Chatham. With atmospheric historic buildings, it is in regular demand as a film set, and features in music videos, documentaries, TV dramas and blockbuster films.

Our industry-standard music facilities include specialist performance rehearsal spaces, practice rooms and music studios installed with state-of-the-art technology. Our flagship studio features a new Neve Genesys Black G48 recording and mixing console and our Music and Audio Arts Sound Theatre is one of the best in the UK.

All our members of staff bring with them a broad range of experience, from our expert academic staff to our highly qualified technicians and practising professionals. Together they will support, develop, challenge and inspire you throughout your studies.

Our innovative undergraduate programmes combine academic study, technical instruction, creative outputs and a variety of professional opportunities. As a valued part of gaining industry knowledge and employability, our students also enjoy a wide variety of guest lectures and workshops from leading experts across the music industry.

We offer students a chance to take a year in industry on a professional work placement or to study for a year abroad. Placements can be taken with a range of employers in the music industry as well as charities and arts organisations. We have partnerships with universities around the world, offering you the chance to rise to the challenge of living in another country and immersing yourself in a different culture.

Career opportunities for our graduates include music recording and production, audio software development, sound for film, music performance, music management, composition and song-writing, research and academia. Additional possibilities include work for video games, the internet and live sound for theatres and festivals.
