Our staff are passionate about their subjects, and their aim is to deliver excellent teaching to enthusiastic students who are committed to achieving their academic potential. Considerable emphasis is placed on developing innovative methods of teaching and assessment, and you will find that the academic environment is supportive and friendly.

We have been designated a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in the creative industries, having won a bid in a major competitive programme of funding in 2005. This has enabled significant investment in our resources and facilities for students across the Schools of Music and Performing Arts, School of Humanities and Cultural Industries and Bath School of Art and Design. Through the development of innovative learning and teaching combined with strengthened links with key employers and industry partners, our Centre will support new models of education and enhance the employability of all students at Bath Spa University.

MA in Jane Austen's England The author Jane Austen's lifetime (1775-1817) spans a fascinating period of British history and both she and her writings need to be understood in the context of her time. This MA concentrates on the world in which Austen lived and it explores the wider social, political and cultural history of a vital period between the American Revolution and the end of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, events that bookend Austen’s life. Why study Jane Austen's England? The course takes students from the last years of George III's active monarchy through to the Regency, and it also encourages students to engage with a complex society that was undergoing rapid growth, commercial/industrial development and growing demands for reform at home, while simultaneously restoring its imperial credentials and expanding to become Europe's leading international power. Additionally it examines the nature of contemporary debates and discussions about gender through Austen's life, work and the characters that she created reflecting the gendered expectations and tensions that operated in both women's and men's lives at the time. Those studying this course will also benefit from its location in Bath and from the well-established association of Bath Spa University with the heritage sector, specifically through our close connections with the Jane Austen Centre, Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton House Library, and the Holburne and other Bath Museums. This will enable students to learn how Jane Austen’s England is used to generate both income and provide jobs in the contemporary local and... [-]

MA in Visual Communication The Masters in Visual Communication is a practical course for specialists. It focuses on the distinct yet related strands of Photography; Illustration and Graphic Design, encouraging its students to collaborate in examining the connection between each discipline and its shared visual language. As specialists in each field and in consultation with their tutors, students will develop their work individually as well as in conjunction with others. This approach provides individuals with a professional and a conceptual context for their practice. Their final portfolio will show evidence of this ability and control and students will be able to present it with confidence when they finish the course and enter the work place, or continue with study. Course structure and Content The ethos of the course is that all Visual Communication specialisms need to work in relation to and in recognition of other related fields. We believe that a contextually informed approach to specialist practice is especially necessary in the present era, when boundaries between disciplines are changing – sometimes even dissolving. The course is therefore designed to allow you to retain and develop your own practice, while collaborating with and maintaining a critical dialogue with others in parallel fields. Modules The course consists of five modules in which students will develop work with an evolving, largely self-directed focus. In all but the first of these practical modules, you will be actively encouraged to collaborate across disciplines, however you will decide the best route for your practice in... [-]
