About Western Carolina University

Western Carolina University is the UNC system's westernmost campus, providing access to higher education for deserving students in the mountain region and driving economic development in the far west as well as across the state. While we remain committed to our regional mission, our reach and impact have expanded in our more than 125-year history.

Over the past decade, Western Carolina has grown exponentially, enrollment exceeding 11,000 students from across the state, country and the globe. This growth is fueled by our vision to be a national model for student learning and engagement as well as our offering a broad range of academic programs that are recognized among the top nationally for quality and affordability. These include programs such as accounting, athletic training, communication sciences and disorders, entrepreneurship, geosciences and natural resources, forensic science, nursing, teaching education and much more.

Campus

Our main campus is located 50 miles west of Asheville in Cullowhee, NC. It's proximity to the tremendous biodiversity of the Southern Appalachian Mountains provides research and discovery access for a wide variety of academic programs as well as unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities. Our students partner with businesses and service providers on regional research and development as well as community service.

We also have offered degree programs in Asheville for more than 75 years. Now located at Biltmore Park Town Square, our Asheville location focuses on professional and graduate degrees for working students. We also partner with local industry to provide educational training in the most in-demand fields.

Academics

Our academic programs and courses are designed to provide classroom study and applied experiences that prepare students for lifelong success. We offer more than 120 undergraduate majors and minors along with more than 40 graduate degrees and certificate programs. Western Carolina also has one of the most active, well-supported and successful undergraduate research programs in the nation. For more than 10 years running, we have been among the top 10 schools in the country for the number of research projects accepted into the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Last year, we were No. 2 in the nation.

Western Carolina University is recognized as a community engaged university by the Carnegie Foundation, a distinction reserved for campuses that demonstrate a commitment to the surrounding communities that are woven into the fabric of the university. Through the Center for Service Learning, students are provided with all the tools necessary to support an engaged learning experience outside of the classroom through meaningful service to our community.

Our Mission

Western Carolina University is a public regional institution of higher education whose mission is to create learning opportunities that incorporate teaching, research, service, and engagement through on campus, off campus, online and international experiences. The university focuses its undergraduate, master’s and three doctoral programs, educational outreach, research, creative, and cultural activities to sustain and improve individual lives and enhance economic and community development in Western Carolina and beyond.

Western Carolina University is the UNC system's westernmost campus and has been consistently ranked as one of the Top 15 public regional institutions in the South.

Location

WCU’s main campus sits in Cullowhee, North Carolina, near the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge mountains, fifty-two miles west of Asheville. The location in the rural mountains amidst incredible biodiversity and unique communities creates an opportunity for academic discovery service. The campus covers approximately 600 acres.

WCU also operates an instructional site at Biltmore Park Towne Square in Asheville, where the university offers degree programs in nursing and engineering as well as graduate programs in accounting, business administration, entrepreneurship, and education.

Enrollment

WCU’s student body is comprised of more than 11,500 students including more than 10,000 undergraduate students.

Approximately 57 percent of students are female and 43 percent male. More than 20 percent of students self-identify as part of a racial minority group. More than 75 percent of students are between the ages of 18 and 24.

Academic Programs

WCU provides more than 115 undergraduate majors and concentrations and more than 40 graduate programs with a focus on high-demand degrees including a variety of programs in engineering, science, healthcare, education, humanities, business and the arts.

Approximately 64 percent of all classes have fewer than 30 students, and the student/faculty ratio is 17 to 1.

Residence Life

More than 4,500 of WCU’s students live on campus in Cullowhee. The campus includes 13 residence buildings, including one for graduate students and one for married students.

Honors College students reside together in one of the central campus residence halls, and Greek organizations have access to a group of townhouses known as The Village.

Campus Dining

On-campus dining options include two cafeterias stocked from local farms along with multiple national brand options such as Chick-Fil-A, Starbuck’s, Moe's Southwest Grill, Steak'n'Shake and others.

There are also Provisions On Demand and C-Stores which have a variety of fresh fruit, dairy, snacks, frozen entrees, and household and personal items available for purchase.

Western Carolina is committed to maintaining accessibility and works to keep costs down while providing the absolute best quality education.

As an NC Promise campus, student receives the same high-quality education experience for an even greater value.

Approximately 83 percent of WCU students receive some form of financial aid.

Western Carolina University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees and holds 21 special program accreditations. Our graduate program offers a variety of concentrations in Chemistry are offered to suit your needs. Research opportunities envelop all the main disciplines of chemistry (analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical) with research groups specializing in applications including materials science, environmental studies, and forensics.

Research in our program is supported by a suite of state-of-the-art instrumentation including FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, UV-Vis, AA and ICP-OES spectrometers as well as chromatography, a particle size analyzer, and a DNA sequencer. Our program utilizes high-performance computers with molecular dynamics software, such as AMBER, and quantum mechanical packages, including NWChem, Spartan, and Gaussian.... [-]

The Master of Science in Technology focuses on enhancing technical knowledge and management skills necessary in our competitive technology-intensive world. This program combines qualitative approaches and quantitative techniques in a balanced curriculum that strengthens problem-solving skills and managerial competence.

Some of our students work full time and are enrolled in the program to learn new skills and advance within their companies. For these students, we offer evening classes in Asheville at our Biltmore Park location. Classes meet only once a week and the entire program can be completed in two years.

Other students choose our full-time program in Cullowhee. The program is designed to permit students to take courses across disciplines providing flexibility to meet individual career needs. These students also work together with a faculty mentor on an advanced project. Through this personalized mentorship, students are given the skills needed to solve challenging problems that they will face in their future careers.... [-]
