Founded in 1891, West Virginia State University is a public, land-grant, historically black university, which has evolved into a fully accessible, racially integrated, and multi-generational institution. The University, “a living laboratory of human relations,” is a community of students, staff, and faculty committed to academic growth, service, and preservation of the racial and cultural diversity of the institution. Its mission is to meet higher education and economic development needs of the state and region through innovative teaching and applied research.

The undergraduate education at the University offers comprehensive and distinguished baccalaureate programs in business, liberal arts, professional studies, sciences and social sciences. The University provides master’s degrees and other opportunities for graduate education.

West Virginia State University offers flexible course schedules in traditional classrooms, in non-traditional settings, and online. Our History Runs Deep

West Virginia State University was founded under the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, one of 19 land-grant institutions authorized by Congress and designated by the states to provide for the education of black citizens in agriculture and the mechanical arts. West Virginia was one of the states that maintained segregated educational systems at that time.

From 1891 to 1915, the original Institute offered the equivalent of a high school education, vocational training, and teacher preparation. In 1915, the West Virginia Collegiate Institute began to offer college degrees. Under the leadership of President John W. Davis, the academic program was expanded and new buildings were constructed, and in 1927, the Institution was accredited by the North Central Association; in 1929, it became West Virginia State College. Over the next decades, WVSC became recognized as one of the leading public institutions of higher education for African-Americans.

In 1954, the United States Supreme Court gave its historic decision outlawing school segregation. The consequence of this decision for West Virginia State College was a rapid transition to an integrated institution serving a predominantly white, commuting, and older student population. Enrollment quadrupled during the following decades.

Meanwhile, by a decision of the West Virginia Board of Education, WVSC was compelled to surrender land-grant status, the only one of the 1890 institutions to do so. Only after a 12-year effort was the college's land-grant status fully restored, in 2001 by an act of Congress.

In 2004, the West Virginia Legislature approved WVSC's transition to University status, and today WVSU offers 22 bachelor's degrees and four master's degrees. With a rich history, and promising future, WVSU is positioned to become the most student-centered research and teaching, land-grant university in West Virginia, and beyond.

MS Law Enforcement and Administration

The <strong>Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration</strong> prepares students for careers in the field of criminal justice, particularly law enforcement, and will enhance the careers of those already in the field. [+]

The Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration prepares students for careers in the field of criminal justice, particularly law enforcement, and will enhance the careers of those already in the field. The program is designed as a cohort group to be completed within six semesters and includes an internship and final paper in the last semester. There are twelve required courses for a total of thirty six (36 hours). Students will be required to take two (2) courses per semester for six consecutive semesters. These courses focus on administration, management, policymaking, law, and ethics. Admission Requirements An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a criminal justice, law enforcement or related field. Satisfactory completion of an undergraduate or graduate course in research methods and/or statistics prior to admission to the program. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 on a 4 point scale. GRE General Test Scores and or Miller’s Analogies test score at the 50th percentile or higher. TOEFL Scores for students whose native language is not English. Three letters of recommendation which address the applicant’s academic competencies, work performance and fitness to pursue this graduate degree. Satisfactory performance on Preadmission Interview. Program Requirements Students are responsible for knowing this bulletin and fulfilling requirements for graduation. The University cannot assume responsibility for failure of students to fulfill catalog and curriculum requirements. If questions arise about requirements, students should consult with the appropriate department chair, college dean, or the Registrar several semesters prior to graduation. Participation in the commencement exercise is required. Performance Standards Universally, a normal course load for most graduate programs is 9 credit hours for full time graduate student status. However, for this cohort program approach, students will take six semester hours each semester and go year-round. All students must complete coursework with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4 point scale. Students who accumulate more than two (2) “C” grades will be dismissed from the program. Students must also complete all requirements within a period of seven years following the date of admission to the program. The Dean of the College of Professional Studies may extend these limits upon recommendation of the Criminal Justice Department Chair and approval of the Criminal Justice Department Graduate Committee. The M.A. in Media Studies is an integrated, interdisciplinary program intended for students with a traditional undergraduate education and some experience in communications and digital media. Students graduating with this degree, unique in West Virginia, are ideally suited to take advantage of the expanding job possibilities in graphic design, digital video production, interactive media and multimedia production, electronic publishing, and on-line information services. Media Studies graduates are prepared for careers as communication experts in such venues as commerce and industry, education and entertainment, and government and the not-for-profit sector. Graduates are also prepared to continue their graduate work toward a doctoral degree. Students will graduate with design, technical, and critical skills and will be well-equipped to address the many challenges faced by corporations, small businesses, government agencies, non-profit organizations and educational institutions as they venture into the digital millennium. Program Impact Information technology has already begun to create demand for highly skilled workers. As electronic commerce becomes more widespread, it will drive further changes in the labor market. States and countries that have an insufficient supply of skilled workers will see high-skilled, high-paying jobs migrate to states and countries that can supply the needed talent. As the information technology and media infrastructure continue to expand, there will be a need for managers, entrepreneurs, and leaders to direct this developing sector of our economy. The Media Studies M.A. program is intended to have a significant impact on the future economic growth of West Virginia. In order for the state to meet the challenges of the emerging digital economy, we must work hard to create new human resources that can prepare us for these challenges. Programs such as this one which are directly related to new technologies and economic growth – will help West Virginia move from an economy based upon heavy industry (coal, chemicals and manufacturing) to one that focuses on media and information technology. Admission Requirements - Graduate Program in Media Studies Students admitted to the Media Studies M.A. program must have: A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university Three letters of recommendation addressing applicant's academic competencies TOEFL score of at least 550 for students whose native language is not English. The Test for Spoken English will also be required. Admissions evaluations employ criteria with emphasis on the applicant's, academic records, professional skills or potential, and personal characteristics. Admission is offered to those candidates who demonstrate the combination of experiences and interests, intellectual capabilities, and personal qualities that are important for success in graduate school. Diversity is viewed as an essential goal for the college community, and differences in age, life experiences, education, extracurricular activities, and racial, ethnic, and/or cultural background are valued in the admissions decision. Meeting stated academic requirements are necessary for consideration, but do not automatically assure admission. Admission is granted on a case-by-case basis by the Media Studies Program Admissions Committee. [-]
