About Bioinformatics

What is the curriculum?

The total credit hours required for graduation is 36. The core courses include two classes in computer science (Bioinformatics, Algorithms), two classes in Statistics (Probability Theory, Applied Statistics), two classes in biology (Cell biology, Genomics), and the Bioinformatics Research Seminar course (taken each semester). The remaining credit hours may be selected from a large number of graduate classes in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis.... Recent faculty hires, support our rich tradition of research training in the traditional fundamental biological disciplines while providing specializations fostering interdisciplinary relationships. About Biological Sciences The Department of Biological Sciences emphasizes the integrative nature of the biological sciences, focusing on research programs that unite three major foci: evolution/ecology, physiology, and biochemistry, cell and molecular biology. Faculty research programs reflect the interdisciplinary strength of our department. Recent faculty hires, support our rich tradition of research training in the traditional fundamental biological disciplines while providing specializations fostering interdisciplinary relationships. What is the curriculum? Thesis A minimum of 30 semester hours is required beyond the baccalaureate degree, of which 21 must be at the 7000 level. A grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained. Students will take courses such as Orientation Grad Study (source of literature in field of biology, data presentation, graphic techniques, and manuscript preparation), College Biology Teaching (teaching of laboratory sections of existing undergraduate courses in the biological sciences), Thesis Proposal (preparation of a thesis project proposal in a grant format and an oral defense), Seminar in Biology (presentations of topics in biology), and Thesis. Attendance at departmental seminars is mandatory. Non-Thesis A minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate courses is required, of which 26 must be at the 7000 level. The total number of semester hours required for graduation will be determined by the student’s advisory committee based on academic background. About Chemistry Chemistry is often mentioned as the central science and you will see that our faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students work at the interface of Chemistry and Biology, Energy, Environment among others. University of Memphis students have access to advanced lab equipment such as flame and graphite furnace atomic absorption instruments, an X-Ray diffractometer, a 500 MHz NMR and a 400 MHz solid-state NMR, an HPLC with a linear ion trap mass spectrometer (MS), a UPLC with triple quadrupole MS, and a UPLC with a quadrupole time-of-flight MS, an Aviv 410 spectrometer with circular dichroism, absorbance, and fluorescence detection with titration, stopped-flow, and temperature control accessories. In addition, the Department of Chemistry has multiple gases and liquid chromatography instruments, and state-of-the-art 3D printing facilities.
