Since 2001 the Live Oak Writing Project (LOWP) has been a collaborative program of The University of Southern Mississippi on the Coast and Mississippi coastal schools. Its purpose is to help teachers improve as writers and effective teachers of writing.

The project provides a model for ongoing professional development that builds independent local programs. Since writing is a skill that is complex, the project models research-based strategies to help students grow as readers, writers, and learners. Programs cross all grade levels and all disciplines.

Anthropology is the study of the human condition, both biological and cultural, across space and time. All societies are confronted with the same issues, from how to adapt to their environment to deciding whom they may marry to understanding the afterlife, but there are myriad ways that these issues are solved. Anthropologists gain an understanding and appreciation of these approaches as they explore the alternative ways of being human.

The non-thesis M.S. in Environmental Sciences is a rigorous, three-semester (summer, fall, and spring) graduate program designed to prepare students for professional careers in the field of environmental science. Completion of this degree will help students gain entry into the fields of environmental consulting, wildlife science, natural resource management, K-12 or community college teaching careers, and a variety of other professions within the environmental sciences.
