Academic Offerings

SHSU offers over 80 bachelor's degree programs, more than 50 master’s degree programs, and ten doctoral programs, including nationally-recognized programs in Business, Fine Arts, Education, Mathematics and Criminal Justice. SHSU is classified as a “Doctoral Research University” by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and was recently recognized by U.S. News and World Report for being among the best in the country for online graduate programs. In addition, the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education classified SHSU as a "Community Engaged" university. The Master of Science in Chemistry degree program at Sam Houston State University is designed to train chemists for a career in business, industry or academics. This degree is also appropriate for students planning to continue into Ph.D. programs at other institutions.

The two-year degree program involves coursework in at least four of the following areas of chemistry: analytical, biochemistry, environmental, inorganic, organic, and physical; and an independent research project culminating in a written thesis. A non-thesis option is also available. There are active research groups in the Department of Chemistry in all of these areas.

The M.S. degree in Statistics is designed to provide individuals with the academic foundation needed to pursue doctoral studies; to prepare competent statisticians who are equipped to accept responsibilities in business, industry, and public service positions; and to present a supplemental graduate program for students specializing in areas where statistics are readily used, such as social sciences, criminal justice, and the physical sciences. Core classes include mathematical statistics, regression analysis, multivariate analysis, and experimental design.

The SHSU Statistics program is widely respected across the state and beyond. Our graduates are sought after by top statistics Ph.D. programs nationwide.
