Rutgers University–Newark

The American Studies graduate program is an interdisciplinary program offering a Ph.D., two Master’s tracks (General and Public Humanities), and an undergraduate minor. Our award-winning faculty, drawn from departments across the humanities and social sciences, are actively engaged in research, writing, and community-based public projects. For graduate students, American Studies offers rigorous training that can prepare students for academic or alt-ac positions or jobs in public history, public humanities, or with cultural or community institutions.

The Department of Economics Master's degree program is designed to prepare individuals for careers in both the public and private sectors. The programs also offer excellent preparation for students considering further work in a Ph.D. program. The 30-credit program has five required courses and five electives which can be chosen from a wide range of related fields, including economics, global affairs, finance, and statistics.

MA in Economics

The Department of English Masters program’s two dozen scholars, poets, and novelists have earned an international reputation by publishing more than 135 books and 1000 articles and reviews. Besides more traditional courses (Chaucer) and innovative versions of traditional subjects, like Race and Gender in the Renaissance or Global Romanticism, we offer a considerable topical variety: Transnational Muslim Fiction.

The Federated Department of History offers a joint Graduate History Program with history faculty at Rutgers University-Newark and NJIT joined in a single federated department that offers an integrated curriculum. The program offers courses in all the major regions of the world and all periods of history but has particular strengths in modern U.S. history, including the history of race, gender, international relations, and urban history; world history; public history (with internships available at local historical organizations); narrative history and the craft of writing history; world history; and the history of technology, environment, and medicine/health.

Founded in 1997, this unique program prepares people to do research, publish, and teach; our students rely on the renowned Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS), the largest public-access jazz library in the world. While there are many bachelor’s and master’s degrees elsewhere in jazz performance, and a few in composition and pedagogy, this program focuses on the history, theory, and cultural contexts of jazz.

The newly created Master’s Program (and Bachelor’s/Master’s Program) in Peace and Conflict Studies offers a unique approach to the issues that will shape our future. Based in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, this program prepares students for further scholarship or employment in three areas: the social bases of peace and conflict, the causes of large-scale violence, and nonviolent social conflict and recovery from violence.

The program provides students with the critical thinking and writing skills required for civic engagement in a democratic society and enables them to pursue careers in the public, non-profit, and private sectors or to pursue further study in political science, law, public service and administration, criminal justice, non-profit administration, global politics, and international relations. The program includes opportunities for internships related to domestic and international politics.

The Department of Psychology at Rutgers-Newark includes world-class researchers in cognition, developmental psychology, neuroscience, and social psychology. We are ranked among the top third of American psychology departments, according to US News and World Report. Our faculty engage in pioneering basic and applied research, publish in premier scientific journals, and lead model community intervention programs. We offer one of the most popular campus majors.

The MFA Program is a nationally ranked studio/research program, which means that our writers study literature as they endeavor to write it. The program focuses strongly on 12 credit hours of Writing Workshop in a declared genre and requires 6 thesis hours in which students work one-on-one with their mentor professors. We also require 18 credit hours of graduate courses in literature. In addition, students will choose 1 of 3 unique Electives Concentrations.

MFA in Creative Writing

The MS program in applied physics offers graduate courses in physics in collaboration with the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The program is designed to meet the demands of modern industry for young researchers with a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and electrodynamics that they can apply to problems in laser spectroscopy, photonics, magnetic resonance, and surface physics.

The goal of the Graduate Program in Biology is to equip students with the research, critical-thinking, and communication skills that are necessary for a successful career as a scientist. The Graduate Program in Biology is a joint program between the departments of Biological Sciences at Rutgers-Newark and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), and offers two degrees: the Master of Science (M.S.) degree, and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

The goal of the Chemistry M.S. Program is to provide students with professional knowledge and technical skills above the B.S. level which will enhance their career potential & opportunities for advancing in their field. The structure of the M.S. program is geared to suit the needs of a part-time student who is already employed in industry or education.

The Environmental Sciences Program at Rutgers-Newark provides students with advanced knowledge of the physical, chemical, and biological processes controlling soil, air, and water quality. The program is offered to full-time and part-time students in collaboration with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NJIT. The 3 learning goals are the following: obtain advanced knowledge in environmental science; engage in and conduct original, publishable research; prepare for a professional career requiring high-level knowledge of environmental processes.

The Division of Global Affairs (DGA) is an interdisciplinary graduate program at Rutgers-Newark dedicated to preparing students for diverse career paths at the international and global levels. DGA offers an unparalleled learning environment, giving students access to a network of academics and practitioners in the field. Central to DGA’s focus is the relationship between globalization and the dynamic role of governments, international and regional organizations, corporations, NGOs, and civil society.
