The Gerdin Business Building provides a high-tech home for the Ivy College of Business. The 111,000-square foot building, located on a campus recognized as one of the most beautiful in the nation, is equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology. Featuring wireless access and high-tech laboratories, our students and faculty can replicate real-world situations in areas such as securities trading, management information systems, and market research.

History

Although business education has been taught at Iowa State University since the early 1920s, the Ivy College of Business was not established until 1984. Its fall 2015 enrollment is 4,485 — a 10% increase from fall 2014. The college moved into the Gerdin Business Building in 2004. The 111,000-square foot building is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including high-tech laboratories that allow students and faculty to replicate real-world business situations, like securities trading and market research.

The College of Business offers graduate courses leading to the Master of Science degree in Information Systems. This degree is designed to provide students with a strong set of technical skills in addition to a broad background in business to enable them to develop and manage a full spectrum of IT projects.

Iowa State University has created a Master of Science degree in Information Systems to address the growing demand for qualified information systems managers. Graduates will help fill the need for highly educated technical employees in today’s information society.

This program will educate students on applying IS theory and concepts to modern IS development through classes that enable students to learn and use the latest software in application projects. The practical training in an internship setting will provide students with exposure to real-world projects. Students graduating from the program will have the advanced technical and managerial skills necessary to obtain immediate employment as a mid-level manager in any one of several organizations.... The Master of Accounting program is designed to meet the needs of accountants in public or private accounting focusing on interpreting and analyzing accounting information for decision-making. This program allows undergraduate accounting majors to complete an advanced degree while pursuing the additional hours needed to meet the 150 hour requirement in most states to become a Certified Public Accountant. The Master of Accounting program is designed to meet the needs of accountants in public or private accounting focusing on interpreting and analyzing accounting information for decision-making. This program allows undergraduate accounting majors to complete an advanced degree while pursuing the additional hours needed to meet the 150 hour requirement in most states to become a Certified Public Accountant. Graduates comply with the Iowa Standards for Certification upon passing the Uniform Certified Public Accounting examination.

Applicants to the program should have a strong academic record. Requirements for admission will generally be:

GPA above a 3.25 (junior/senior GPA will be considered if better than overall) Grades of no worse than a B in all required accounting courses. Completed at least four upper division accounting courses, including Acct 387 Demonstrate strong professional communication skills through the required essays GMAT score of at least 50th percentile* GMAT writing of at least 4.5* ... The Master of Finance (MFin) degree at Iowa State is designed to prepare students for careers in corporate finance, financial analysis, investing and wealth management, and risk management. [+]

The Master of Finance (MFin) degree at Iowa State is designed to prepare students for careers in corporate finance, financial analysis, investing and wealth management, and risk management. Although not a “quant” program, the Iowa State MFin emphasizes more quantitative methods and skills than either an undergraduate finance degree or MBA program. As the field of Finance has become more quantitative, employers are increasingly asking for and valuing hard analytical skills.

Among other core finance topics such as financial analysis and valuation, MFin students will learn advanced regression techniques and programming approaches for data analysis, time series analysis and forecasting, use of probability distributions, optimization techniques, modelling of financial and risk variables, simulation techniques, value at risk measurement, and tools for effective risk management. These tools will equip students to effectively analyze and solve problems encountered in today’s rapidly changing financial environment.... [-]
