Introduction

Our mission is to lead in computer science research and education that has a real-world impact — to push the frontiers of the field and produce the next generation’s leaders.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At its foundation, the School of Computer Science is a collective and expansive community, committed to equity and inclusivity. As a global community, it is crucial that SCS be welcoming and inclusive in order to achieve excellence in the instruction, research, and application of computer science. We work to ensure equal access for students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds.

We also recognize that the institutions in our country must be change agents in order to create a more just and equitable world. With our legacy of creating data-driven solutions to solve difficult real-world problems, CMU and SCS stand uniquely positioned to positively affect the trajectory of this transformation.

Outreach Initiatives

Computer science as a field faces incredible challenges. Only one in four schools offer any form of digital literacy classes — a staggering number, given that the U.S. will have about 1.4 million computer science-related jobs in 2020. As it stands now, we’ll only have enough CS grads nationally to fill about a third of them. To make matters worse, most of the schools that offer CS classes reside in affluent school districts, creating a big knowledge gap between kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

In SCS, we’re working hard to bridge that gap and introduce students to computer science well before they get to college.

Giving to SCS

Celebrate the Past, Fund the Future

Computer science underpins nearly everything in our lives in ways we might not have imagined a generation ago, and SCS has played a huge role in sparking that sea change. But while we celebrate our history, we're focused on the future. We're training the innovators and dreamers to create the technologies that will change how the next generation lives and works. Your gift to SCS supports these dreamers, but it doesn't stop there. It also allows us to help faculty members achieve their research goals. It gives us the flexibility to move quickly to meet educational and quality-of-life needs. It helps us develop new ways to work with the community, spread the word about SCS and encourage future generations to consider computer science as a career.

Your dedication to SCS funds our future. And that's pretty amazing.

Campus Features

Most offices and classrooms used by the School of Computer Science are located in six buildings on our Pittsburgh Campus.

Gates Center for Computer Science

  • Computer Science Department
  • Machine Learning Department

Hillman Center for Future-Generation Technologies

  • Computational Biology Department
  • Language Technologies Institute

Newell-Simon Hall

  • Human-Computer Interaction Institute
  • Robotics Institute

Smith Hall (behind Hamburg Hall of CMU Heinz College)

  • Robotics Institute (offices and labs)

The Robotics Institute

Most of our robots are located within laboratories and are not readily accessible to the public. But Tank, the Roboceptionist (an interactive social robot) operates on most weekdays at the third-floor entrance to Newell-Simon Hall. Victor the Gamebot, who loves playing Scrabble, resides in the third-floor common area in the Gates Hillman Center and is always up for a match. Both robots invite you to visit.

Additionally, the Robotics Institute often hosts an open house during the university’s annual Spring Carnival in April. The details of this event are posted on the Robotics Institute website as the registration date approaches.
