Training opportunities are important components of any science program, and here at ASU, our students have first-rate medical and research training opportunities available to them. We have partnerships with medical training institutions, including the University of South Alabama School of Medicine and the Virginia Tech Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. Our Students also obtain hands-on experience in the medical profession through our Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association (TPaiDA) program. Our graduates are trained in the ASCA National Model with an emphasis on program development, implementation, and evaluation. Graduates are also equipped with the knowledge of effective interventions and the skills to implement these interventions. [+]

The mission of the Counselor Education Program at Alabama State University is to prepare graduates who will perform as professional counselors in schools and community agencies. The program provides a strong framework in counseling theories and techniques, as well as “hands-on” practicum and internship experiences.

Graduates are expected to exhibit high levels of self-awareness; ethical behavior; knowledge of adaptive and maladaptive thought processes and behaviors; skills to effect positive client behavior changes; and the personal characteristics of caring, empathic helpers.

The program will prepare students for advanced social work training/academic leadership in the areas of Forensics, Gerontology, Behavioral and Mental Health. The program is designed to attract highly motivated students who demonstrate a strong commitment to promoting social and economic justice. Students will learn to systematically apply social work knowledge and skills (theory, research methods, and best practices) to assist "at-risk" populations. [+]

Alabama State University has a new Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program, approved recently by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education (ACHE), set to begin Fall 2015. Students admitted will have a choice of pursuing the degree via three different options, which includes:

traditional (two-year, full time); advanced-standing (12 months); and part-time (four-year).
