Kadir Has University

Introduction

Kadir Has University (KHU) was founded in , in Istanbul. The university, with its five faculties of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Economics and Administrative Sciences, Communication, Law and Fine Arts, as well as its several vocational schools, is dedicated to becoming a leader in educational and cultural fields in Turkey, as well as establishing itself as an international center for research and scientific development.

Our Philosophy

The founder of Kadir Has University, the late Mr Kadir Has, dedicated his life to education.

The founding of our institution grew out of his personal philosophy: "I will strive to do and be the best for my country." In keeping with this motto, our purpose is to facilitate the education, development and prosperity of today’s youth by means of innovative research and academic teaching that inspires democratic thinking and practice. We believe that education can fortify our students, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of their own time.

Our aim is to create an environment of education, research, and discussion at the level of the best universities in the world. Thus we offer education based on both traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary models; we foster the skills necessary for continuing social and cultural development; and, while helping students prepare for the future, we encourage their search for higher truths.

The central tenet of Kadir Has University’s philosophy is to produce students who are self-confident, who question, who consider all perspectives and evaluate them without prejudice, and who are open to the winds of change. We want students to see that as successful scholars and fulfilled individuals, they are the leaders of our society.

MSc in Architectural and Urban Studies

Campus Full time September 2018 Turkey Istanbul

The new M.Sc. Program in Architectural and Urban Studies seeks to play a leading role in promoting this intertwined, multi-scalar conceptualization of architecture and the city, both in history and in the contemporary world, and invites original graduate level research projects about the design, production and representation of the built environment from critical, interdisciplinary perspectives. [+]

In our “urban age”, different design disciplines (Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design and Landscape) all claim the city as their territory of concern, research and intervention. As the boundaries between these disciplines get increasingly blurred, it is no longer possible to think about buildings, building complexes and public spaces independent of the urban contexts and regional hinterlands in which they are situated. Nor is it possible to ignore the multiple actors involved when it is not just design professionals (architect, planner, urban designer, landscape designer etc.) but also political authorities, local governments, developers, various non-governmental, professional and community organizations, users and the public at large that contribute to the shaping of the built environment in different ways. Conceived in close collaboration with the Istanbul Studies Center of KHas University, the program intends to offer a productive platform of research and scholarship where architectural and urban studies can enhance each other, sharing new knowledge, research methods, representation techniques and interdisciplinary insights. The graduates of the program are expected to work in the disciplines of architecture, urban design, planning and landscape not just as design professionals in practice, but also in a myriad of different capacities as... Biology, biotechnology and biosciences have been rapidly developing since 2000. To handle the data produced, computer technology is required due to the excessive amount of data. Most of the recent techniques used in DNA, RNA and protein based research is supported by bioinformatics and computer science. The computer science offers a new era for the biological sciences. For example the building block of the cell, proteins are modeled in 3D using computer; this enables the rapid and efficient identification of molecular interactions and signal transduction pathways. Similarly, mutations in the genetic sequence can be detected quite fast using the computer technology. Since the recent advancements in computational biology decreased the cost and accelerated the research processes including the drug development, the in silico studies are highly demanded in industry. These studies will help therapeutic methods, which will ultimately be used for treatment and increase the quality of life. The department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics offers an education comprising programming (object oriented), bioinformatics & genomics, molecular modeling applications and cell biology & genetics. Graduates of this program will be able to use the latest computer technology in order to solve problems about biological systems, such as designing a drug and testing a drug candidate’s interactions in computer environment. As a vital input of economy, energy is one of the most strategic tools for sustainable development of countries. The contemporary energy system, which is 90 percent dependent on fossil fuels, is not sustainable due to resource scarcity, environmental problems, and global climate change. Another factor increasing the importance of energy is that in today’s world, where natural gas is used as a transition fuel on the path towards a low-carbon energy system, the geopolitical rivalry among major energy players continues to heighten. This rivalry accelerates the struggle for resources and causes global economic and political destabilization. Turkish energy system is also faced with crucial problems. Turkey imports about three quarter of its energy in exchange for 50-60 billion USD and its dependence on foreign resources threatens energy security as well as national security of the country. Turkey’s import dependency on natural gas and oil, which are the most consumed primary resources, is currently more than 90 percent. Furthermore, domestic energy production is gradually decreasing while the gap between production and consumption continues to widen. In the 21st century, state economy cannot be sustained under such circumstances in energy. Another important feature of Turkey’s energy system is high energy demand owing to her rapid development, which attracts the attention of the world as a rising market. In the last 50 years, the primary energy demand increased by 5 percent while the demand for electricity increased by 8 percent and this situation is expected to continue for a long time. Therefore,... [-]
