Introduction

With around 2,800 students and 650 teaching staff, Zurich University of the Arts is one of the major universities of the arts in Europe. The study and research programme covers the areas of design, film, fine arts, music, dance, theatre, transdisciplinary studies, and the teaching of arts and design. The university also has many venues for exhibitions and performances, where the results of the education provided can be shown in public.

Zurich University of the Arts is part of the Zurich Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts (ZFH), and is a state university with its own legal entity.

Bachelor’s and Master’s studies

A degree programme resulting in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree lasts three years, and can be taken in the following subject areas at ZHdK: Art Education, Contemporary Dance, Design, Film, Music, Theatre.

Master’s degree programmes ending in a Master of Arts (MA) degree generally require three to four semesters of full-time study. The following Master of Arts degrees are offered at ZHdK: Art Education, Dance, Composition and Theory, Design, Film, Fine Arts, Music Performance, Specialized Music Performance, Music Pedagogy, Theatre, Transdisciplinary Studies.

There is also a wide range of continuing education available, resulting in the following qualifications: Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

Master of Arts in Dance

The Master of Arts in Dance offers two specializations: Choreography, on one hand, Teaching and Coaching Dance Professionals on the other. It builds the choreographic and teaching skills needed to work with dance professionals and to qualify for the relevant professions. Coursework includes choreographic methods, teaching skills, and artistic research with a view to developing an individual artist or teaching profile. The programme promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and helps students to establish a sustainable network within the international field of dance. [+]

Students pursuing a Master of Arts in Design deepen their existing design expertise through building an expanded set of disciplinary, entrepreneurial, and research skills. Our full-time three-semester programme has a strong research orientation, requiring students to undertake an individual Master projector to choose, manage, and bring to completion a proposed cooperation project. This course model creates the ideal conditions for graduates to enter positions of responsibility in enterprises, or to set up their own agencies, or to devote themselves to teaching and research, or to pursue an academic career by undertaking doctoral work leading to a Ph.D. [+]

Im Master of Arts in Design entwickeln Designerinnen und Designer sowie Persönlichkeiten aus designverwandten Gebieten ihre Könnerschaft und erreichen eine fachliche Exzellenz. Im Zentrum des Masterstudiums steht die forschungsorientierte Arbeits- und Denkweise entlang des eigenen Designprojekts. Die Kombination aus hoher Eigenverantwortung, reflexivem und interdisziplinärem Denken, einer eigenen Designhaltung sowie unternehmerischem Handeln spielt bei der Befähigung für die weiteren Karriereschritte eine ebenso entscheidende Rolle wie die Anschlussfähigkeit zu internationaler Praxis oder weiterführender Hochschulbildung.

There are two separate Master of Arts in Music Performance programmes aiming at different fields of study:

The Master in Music Performance offers a broad profile in instrumental and vocal concert performance. The Master in Specialized Music Performance offers three specializations: solo performance, orchestral performance, including orchestral piano, and chamber music, including collaborative piano.
