The arts provide insight and understanding – Faculty of Arts in Gothenburg.

We devote ourselves to research and education with a focus on how we as humans relate to our own lives, to other people, to the unfamiliar and to history.

Our subjects, like religion, history, philosophy and gender studies provide a better understanding of both our own and other people's cultures. An increasingly globalized world also requires good language skills. We offer some 20 languages to immerse oneself in.

Research in the arts is characterized by diversity and breadth. In recent years, three profiles have developed into strong research environments at the faculty: language technology, medieval studies, and critical heritage studies.

The study of the history of philosophy is a historical as well as a philosophical discipline. It is philosophical because it seeks the origins of contemporary philosophical debates. It is historical because it seeks to understand these origins on their own terms and in their own context. Consequently, its practitioners must be not only philosophically competent but also proficient in the use of historical methods.

Moreover, in the Ancient and Medieval Western world, philosophers from Plato and Aristotle to Thomas Aquinas and William Ockham wrote in either Greek or Latin. This means that anyone who wants to know what these philosophers really said, without the distortions inevitably caused by translations, must also have a grasp of the classical languages and such related auxiliary disciplines as paleography and textual criticism.... At the Department of Languages and Literatures, we offer a large variety of courses at the Master's level. You can take the courses separately or as part of a Master's degree. The courses are often divided into smaller modules, for example, 7.5 credits or 15 credits, so if you want to conduct full-time studies you have to apply for more than one course. However, the range of courses for the subjects varies.

Education at graduate level comprises of one or two years of full-time studies (60 or 120 credits, c) and can lead to a Master’s degree (one year or two years).

There is no set program to reach a degree, instead, you can choose different courses and also between literary and linguistic specialization.... [-]

Logic, Master’s Program

Logic is traditionally defined as the study of formal aspects of valid reasoning, but today many logicians see logic as a more general study of formal systems and their applications. The conceptual frameworks and tools developed by pure research in modern logic have found many applications in diverse disciplines studying formal languages and systems, e.g., software engineering and computational linguistics.

As an academic subject logic is genuinely interdisciplinary and located on the border between Philosophy, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Linguistics. The exchange is active and mutually beneficial. Logic is nowadays an active international area of study and research also in mathematics, computer science, and linguistics.
