The Instituto Franklin de la Universidad de Alcalá is the only University Institute for Research on North America in Spain.

Founded in 1987, its activity focuses on postgraduate research and education related to American Studies and Bilingual Education through research projects, scholarships and grants, and its dissemination in own publications and scientific events.

As a center of the Universidad de Alcalá, its nature, composition and powers conform to the provisions of the statutes of the UAH, Chapter IX: “About University Institutes”.

Mission

The mission of the Instituto Franklin-UAH is to serve as a platform for communication, cooperation, and union between Spain and North America, in order to promote mutual understanding.

Goals

The objectives of the Instituto Franklin-UAH are…

  • To provide a forum for the analysis and dissemination of issues related to North America, especially in the United States, with an academic and social outreach.
  • To enhance cooperation between the Universidad de Alcalá and North American institutions, paying particular attention to relationships with Hispanic communities in the United States.
  • To promote the generation of knowledge and analysis, allocating funds to research projects and to the training of new researchers in their natural scope of action.
  • Training students in a framework of academic excellence fostering the development of their professional skills.

Activity

The Institute is funded through the enrollment fees of the different academic programs it offers. Its economic activity is detailed in the Annual Financial Report of the Universidad de Alcalá.

Research

  • The main lines of research are Hispanics in the USA, bilingual education, and North American culture and society.
  • The amount of € 150,000 is allocated each year, intended to train researchers and to disseminate the research results.
  • Publications in the Tribuna norteamericana (current in the USA) and Camino Real (Hispanic in the USA) journals.
  • It promotes research by subsidizing publications of academic content.
  • It organizes international seminars and conferences.

Education

  • Provides training for Doctors in American Studies.
  • Offers the only Master’s Degree in American Studies in Spain.
  • Teaches 4 Master’s Degrees related to International and Bilingual Education.
  • Trains American conversation assistants in Spain.
  • Receives 500 North American students annually.

Teach & Learn in Spain

The objective of the Teach & Learn in Spain Program is to offer native English speaking students the opportunity of studying a Master’s Degree and be a language assistant in a school in the region of Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid). This is a yearlong academic program.

Application period: November 15th, 2017 – February 15th, 2018.

Students can choose one of the following Masters’ Degrees:

  • Master of International Education
  • Master of Bilingual and Multicultural Education
  • Master of Learning and Teaching Spanish as a Second Language
  • Master of Teaching
  • Master of Special Education in a Bilingual Context (New)
  • Master of School Management (New)

Each MA Degree is accredited by the Universidad de Alcalá and includes 60 ECTS credits.

The cost of the program is: €3.800 for Option B and 4.200 for Option C.

How to fund your studies

When applying to the Master program students can choose one of the following options:

OPTION A (Tuition remission) OPTION B (Out of pocket tuition) OPTION C (Out of pocket tuition)
DESCRIPTION Student requests a placement in a charter or private school (Comunidad de Madrid) as language assistant. There is a limited number of placements.
Students accepted into this option do not pay out of pocket Tuition and receive Financial Aid.
Student requests a placement in a public school (Comunidad de Madrid) as a language assistant. With this option, student pays tuition and gets a monthly stipend through the Comunidad de Madrid. Student does not receive a placement in our affiliated schools nor the Language Assistants program of the Comunidad de Madrid.
For this option, a student can already be placed in an auxiliary/teaching program, or work in a teaching related field. With this option, student pays full tuition and does not receive Financial Aid nor a stipend.
STUDENT OBTAINS - Between €600 and €800 per month (9,5 months)

APPLICATION PAYMENT Students pay a deposit: €500 (Mar 28 – Apr 10, 2018).
This deposit will be reimbursed as long as the student completes the program and does not leave before June 30, 2019
Once the deposit is received by Instituto Franklin-UAH, students are not entitled to a refund under any circumstances
Total cost of the program: 3.800 euros.
Once a student is accepted in our program, they payment schedule is as follows:
- First payment: €500 (January 10-30, 2018)
- Second payment: €3,100 (May 15-30, 2018)
Student gets a €200 discount

Once payments are received by Instituto Franklin-UAH, students are not entitled to a refund under any circumstances

or
- First payment: €500 (Mar 28 – Apr 10, 2018)
- Second payment: €1,000 (May 15-30, 2018)
- Third payment: €1,100 (Oct 1-15, 2018)
- Final payment: €1,200 (Feb 1-15, 2019)

Once payments are received by Instituto Franklin-UAH, students are not entitled to a refund under any circumstances
Total cost of the program: 4.200 euros.
Once a student is accepted in our program, the payment schedule is as follows:
- First payment: €500 (January 10-30, 2018)
- Second payment: €3.500 (May 15-30, 2018)
Student gets a €200 discount

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA - Must have a BA Degree Diploma - Must have a BA Diploma or expects to obtain before May 2018
- Has not been an assistant with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport's "North American Language and Culture Assistants Program" for the last two consecutive years.
- Must have a BA Degree Diploma
- Should already be placed in a language assistant/teaching program
Or
- Should work in a teaching related field.

The Master in International Education is part of the Teach & Learn in Spain Master Program, and it is designed for future professionals, teachers and administrators who pursue a career in an international environment in all educational levels (from kindergarten to high school). [+]

The Master in International Education is part of the Teach & Learn in Spain Master Program, and it is designed for future professionals, teachers and administrators who pursue a career in an international environment in all educational levels (from kindergarten to high school).

This Master provides a comprehensive background in the historical, theoretical, and social foundations of international education programs including the cultural aspects in the classroom, global English in an intercultural context, and leadership and educational management in an international environment.

It is structured into three distinct areas that include: academic courses, a life experience portfolio and the submission of a Master’s Thesis. It lasts an academic year (9 months), from September to June, and is worth 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits.
