Welcome to Pavol Jozef Šafárik University

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University was established in 1959 as the second classical University in Slovakia. The current structure of P. J. Šafárik University includes five faculties – Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration and Faculty of Arts. At our University more than 7 500 students are studying.

The University provides education in three main cycles - bachelor’s, master’s, doctor´s and PhD. studies in different fields. The process of education is provided in both, Slovak and English language. Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice provides higher education based on the newest scientific findings in a wide international context. The University co-operates very intensively with academic institutions all around the world.

Mission of the University

Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice belongs to accomplished institutions of education and science not only in Slovakia but also in Europe.

At present the University has five faculties – Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Public Administration and Faculty of Arts – which prepare physicians and dentists, experts in natural sciences, mathematics and informatics, teachers, lawyers, specialists for public administration and specialists for psychology, philosophy and theory of communication. The graduates of our University which is the second oldest in Slovakia, have a very good reputation all over the world.

The key mission of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is to provide higher education based on the newest scientific findings in a wide international context, following the European trends and goals laid down in the Bologna Declaration and other documents. Developing a harmonious personality by its knowledge improvement, wisdom and creativity rise in a person, the University fulfils its mission.

The students are being led to tolerance, critical and independent way of thinking, self-confidence and national awareness. The University provides service to the community by spreading the knowledge through the means of research and development, regional and national activities support and providing learning society with a continuing education. The University thus contributes to the development of culture and education of the public.

The University mission is understood as public goodwill. Master of Science in Biology: Concentration in Botany and Plant Physiology

Campus Full time 2 years September 2017 Slovakia Košice

Graduate of Master study programme Botany and Plant Physiology will obtain widespread foundation of theoretical knowledge in Plant Biology. He or she will also receive training in research methodology (developing of experimental design in the field and in laboratory settings, field work, biotechnology, analytical methods – karyotyping, chemical analysis of plants, enzymology and others). Graduate of Master study programme Botany and Plant Physiology will obtain widespread foundation of theoretical knowledge in Plant Biology. He or she will also receive training in research methodology (developing of experimental design in the field and in laboratory settings, field work, biotechnology, analytical methods – karyotyping, chemical analysis of plants, enzymology and others). Graduate will experience research result presentation at the scientific meetings and in the publications. He or she will be able to continue education at the PhD level in the field of Botany, Plant Physiology and similar fields. Master of Science in Biology: Concentration in Genetics and Molecular Biology

Graduate will be able independently to solve research problems in biology and biology applications. He or she will have knowledge and experience in research methods of living systems at the different organization levels (molecule, cell, organism, population, and ecosystem). [+]

Graduate will be able independently to solve research problems in biology and biology applications. He or she will have knowledge and experience in research methods of living systems at the different organization levels (molecule, cell, organism, population, and ecosystem). Graduates will be able to assist in teaching of biology disciplines at the higher education level. Graduates will be knowledgeable in the basic biological disciplines (genetics, molecular biology, plant and animal physiology, cytology, immunology, microbiology, etiology, botany, zoology, human biology, ecology etc.), in several chemistry disciplines and multidisciplinary sciences. Graduates have excellent chances to be successful in wide range of employment at the research institutions with focus in biology and chemistry fields (Slovak Academy of Sciences, universities, health care, forestry and agriculture, food industry, environmental protection agencies). It is assumed that majority of graduates will continue in the 3rd degree of higher education, i.e. Ph.D. programme, in one of the biology study progammes at institutions at home or abroad. Graduate will be able independently to solve research problems in biology and biology applications. He or she will have knowledge and experience in research methods of living systems at the different organization levels (molecule, cell, organism, population, and ecosystem). Graduates will be knowledgeable in the basic biological disciplines (genetics, molecular biology, plant and animal physiology, cytology, immunology, microbiology, etiology, botany, zoology, human biology, ecology etc.). In addition, they will have knowledge in several chemistry disciplines and multidisciplinary sciences such as biophysics, biochemistry and bioinformatics. Further they will possess deep theoretical knowledge in wide range of physiology and zoology disciplines. Graduates will master methodology and experimental practices in its major, which he or she can apply in either future employment or in the 3rd degree of higher education, i.e. Ph.D. programme. Graduates will be able to participate in teaching of biology disciplines at the higher education level. Further, graduates have excellent chances to be successful in jobs at the research and diagnostic facilities in health care, hygiene, and at the institutes of Slovak Academy of Sciences. They can also work in the laboratories at the universities, museums, or environmental protection agencies, as well as in private sector, for example in domestic and foreign pharmaceutical companies.
