The University of Algarve (Portugal) is a young public university, with a student population close to 9,000 and employs over 700 academics. In these last three decades, the University of Algarve has consolidated the link established with the regional business and with the public and private organizations, encouraging the transfer of knowledge and contributing to sustainable development with a positive impact across the community.
Established in four campuses, three in the city of Faro and one in Portimão, the University of Algarve offers courses in six thematic areas: Arts, Literature and History; Engineering Sciences; Life, Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences; Medicine and Allied Sciences; Social, Education and Professional Training Sciences; and Economics, Management and Tourism. The studies in these areas include undergraduate and postgraduate (Master and Ph.D.) degrees.
Research at the University of Algarve is carried out in dynamic and prominent research centers, which produce innovation and added value enhancing research and development in different fields such as Marine Sciences, Biology and Biomedicine, Electronics and Telecommunications, Literature, History, Communications, and Arts. Located in the southernmost part of Portugal, one of the most touristic regions of Portugal, the University has three university campuses located in Faro (capital of the region, with an international airport, sports stadium, central hospital) and one in Portimão, Algarve’s second main city.
Recently, there has been a significant increase of foreign students from more than 60 countries due to the internationalization strategy of the University of Algarve. Of its 9,000-student population, 10% are foreign students, of which nearly half are at the University under bilateral agreements and cooperation programmes, mainly Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus. The quality and diversity of European Masters and Doctorates, combined with postgraduate courses open to students from all over the world explain the magnitude of this mobility.
All campuses offer specific classrooms, computer and multimedia labs, auditoriums, libraries and study and meeting rooms. Wireless Internet access is available on all campuses. With accommodation in residence halls for over 600 students, several canteens and cafeterias throughout the various campuses, medical services and cultural and sports activities, the University of Algarve has witnessed a significant growth in terms of student population, modern facilities and the quality and diversity of programmes on offer.
