About Us Unitec is New Zealand’s largest institute of technology, with more than 20,000 students studying over 150 work-oriented programmes. We offer leading employment-focused education at our two campuses in Mt. Albert, and Waitākere. Learning and teaching Learning and teaching are at the heart of our transformation. Learning and teaching is our core business, and we’re committed to doing it better so our graduates get better jobs, better careers and better lives. How are … [+] we changing? Over the last few years, many of our teachers have been drawing on new teaching methods that include more work-based learning, new technologies, and different styles of working with students. We call this the Living Curriculum. These approaches are all designed to make our graduates more employable. Now our focus is on applying these new approaches to every programme at Unitec so that every student can be sure their Unitec education genuinely prepares them for their chosen career. Over the next three years (2015- 2017) every programme is being reviewed and remodelled to have components of work-based learning, online learning, face-to-face learning and independent/group work. How are our teachers changing? We are investing heavily in professional development so our teachers are able to make the most of the new technologies and the face-to-face time they have with students. Dean of Teaching and Learning Linda Keesing-Styles says: “We are asking teachers to confront their current approaches to learning and teaching and to stretch their practice into new approaches that are aligned with contemporary trends. This includes highly student-centered practices, the utilisation of significant components of web-based learning and employing new practices such as gamification and maker spaces.” How are we preparing our graduates for work? We're closing the gap between education and industry. We know from our research that employers in New Zealand want our students to have more work-integrated learning opportunities while they study, so they have access to a pool of highly capable and work-ready graduates. We're moving to higher levels of practical work-integrated learning in all of our programmes. To achieve this we're seeking more and deeper relationships with industry partners. We want to make it easier and more beneficial for businesses and other organisations to work with us so we can connect them with our curriculum, our staff and our students – and ultimately deliver them and their industries great graduates to employ. How are we changing our spaces? Another factor in developing experienced, work-ready graduates is making sure they have the right spaces to learn in with the best technology available to support them. We’ve developed a prototype learning space at our Mt. Albert campus which allows students and teaching staff to experience innovative new approaches to learning and teaching with the best new educational technologies and facilities. The new space encourages students to collaborate, share ideas, work together with students from other programmes, and learn valuable soft skills like teamwork. We are collecting user feedback and usage data in this space and use it to improve learning and teaching environments and designs for new spaces. See below for a video of our teachers learning in our new prototype learning and teaching space: Read more about our teaching revolution

'A different kind of summer school' For those who aspire and achieve: a taste of university life in English-speaking countries Kingdom Education offers novel, exciting and stimulating programmes to students who like to be challenged intellectually and creatively. They’re specially designed for high school students considering their options for university or college – whether in an English-speaking country, or elsewhere. Our programmes are held on the campuses of leading uni… [+] versities. Most are multi-centre, so students can see different sides of the country visited. They take place in the United Kingdom from early July to early August, in the United States of America in July, in Canada in August, and, for closed groups, between December and February in Australia and New Zealand. Considering university or college in one of the countries offered? This will be a huge investment – in terms both of money and of time. Make sure it’s the right investment! These are the questions which we think students should be asking themselves: Am I choosing the right subject, and am I preparing for it correctly? Is it the right university or the right city for me? Is it the right country for me? Kingdom Education helps students to find answers to these questions by: Introducing them to a choice of subject area, and to skills which they’ll need in the future Taking them to see a selection of universities, in many cases, with presentations by admissions staff Visiting the cities in which the universities are based Showing what life is like as a university student in whichever country is visited Who can take a KE summer programme? Students aged 14-16 Students aged 16-18 Native speakers of English and learners at intermediate level or above (min. 5.5 [IELTS]/80 [TOEFL iBT]/B2 [CEF]/FCE). And is it suitable? Kingdom Education is definitely suitable for students who are looking for opportunities to: Think in new ways Challenge themselves Meet interesting new people with ideas and imagination KE programmes run just for two or three weeks, occasionally four, but they’re full of activity and action. We must be honest: if you’re looking for programmes in which much of the time is spent on games and shopping, these might not be the right choice. But if you’re looking for an experience which will really change perceptions, please continue. This really is ‘A DIFFERENT KIND OF SUMMER SCHOOL…’ The programmes Offered in the UK (early July – mid-August), the USA (July), Canada (August), Australia or New Zealand (mainly January, mainly for groups) Run for two weeks or three weeks (sometimes four) during university vacations Generally multi-centre Each programme has a number of different courses (one per week) and special features unique to Kingdom Education. The courses Each programme includes different courses: 2-week programmes include two courses, each lasting one week 3-week programmes include three courses, each lasting one week 4-week programmes include four courses, each lasting one week Course 1 (the order in which the courses are taken may vary) Specialist subject – students choose one of these (or two for 4-week programmes): Creative arts Economics, business & entrepreneurship Engineering & technology Law, society & international relations Medical sciences & psychology Course 2 ‘Skills for learning’– students choose one of these, depending on their interest and level of English: Critical thinking SAT and ACT preparation (USA only) English for academic purposes (EAP) (UK only) Communication skills with TOEFL (USA) or IELTS (other countries) Course 3 (all 3-week programmes, plus 2-week programmes with St Andrews) Leadership training and development Each course includes 16 hours of classroom tuition, plus homework and project work, and the maximum class size is 15 (though most classes are smaller). ‘Skills for living’ – with university preparation These special features prepare students for many aspects of life, at university and beyond, and are included on every programme: Applying for university – guidance in making a good choice, with an introduction to application procedures, followed by practice in drafting personal statements or essays, and by two one-to-one interviews Study visits – visits to famous cities, including one or more universities, followed by general sightseeing (each visit is preceded by a seminar about the places which are seen) Student mentors – contact with carefully selected students from the universities visited, who introduce our KE students to life there Tutorials – weekly meetings in a small group News reviews – a 30-minute look at the daily news Special meals, with ‘dining & etiquette’ – formal dinner, preceded by a seminar on dining and etiquette – plus an afternoon tea (UK) or a barbecue (other countries) Local sports and pastimes – e.g. cricket, croquet, punting, baseball, golf Presentations – team presentations based on students’ experiences during the programme Study centres With Kingdom Education, students have the opportunity to live and study on the campuses of some of the leading universities in the English-speaking world, including: UK: London or Cambridge, plus Durham and St. Andrews. Visits to London, Cambridge, York and Edinburgh. USA: University of Massachusetts and/or UC Berkeley. Visits to New York, Boston and San Francisco. Canada: Calgary, and with a six-day tour ending in Vancouver (plus a chance to spend one week at UC Berkeley first). Australia: Queensland and Melbourne. Shorter stays in Sydney and Canberra. New Zealand: Visit all eight universities, and see the country from north to south. Our mission statement ‘Our mission is to provide ambitious young minds with the foundations for success in a global context. To this end, we offer life-changing experiences at centres of academic excellence across the English-speaking world, together with guidance on applying to top universities and on pursuing top careers. Our philosophy is that success depends not just on the ability to memorise and prepare for examinations, but also on critical and independent thought, on commitment and passion, on creativity and imagination, on teamwork and debate.’ The Kingdom Education 10-point difference What’s different about Kingdom Education? We’ve summarised the difference in these ten points: We have an atmosphere in which bright students can interact purposefully with other bright students, sharing ideas and aspirations. You can experience campus life at some of the most famous universities in one of five English-speaking countries: the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. You have the opportunity to take 2-centre or 3-centre programmes in order to see more aspects of the country visited. You’ll be introduced to university study in a choice of academic subjects (creative arts; economics, business & entrepreneurship; engineering & technology; law, society & international relations; medical sciences & psychology). Under ‘Skills for learning’, you have a choice between: critical thinking; preparation for SAT and ACT (USA only); English for academic purposes (UK only); communication skills with TOEFL (USA only) or IELTS (in other countries). On many of our programmes, you can take a challenging and exciting course in leadership skills. We arrange carefully planned study visits to leading universities as well as to major cultural attractions. You can take part in activities typical of the country visited (e.g. golf, cricket, baseball). You’ll be accompanied and tutored by a carefully-selected local mentors. We expect a positive and participatory approach on the part of all our students, group leaders and staff. Study visits Our study visits are an important, and very popular part of our programmes. A Kingdom Education study visit typically has two elements: Visit to a university. We arrange visits to a range of high-ranking universities. Very often, there is a presentation by the university admissions staff; sometimes, our staff conduct the visit, or we engage someone from the university to do this for us. General sightseeing (usually in the afternoons). You’ll see the sights that everyone wants to see! So if you go to the UK, you’ll see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the Tower of London etc. etc… Introductory seminar Just before every visit, you’ll join a seminar, usually with a powerpoint presentation. This is a really valuable introduction to what you’ll be seeing, and it shows you what to look out for. Also: Because these are not conventional excursions, our special Kingdom Education study visits generally don’t include visits inside places like the Tower of London – we don’t have the time for that. But you do have the opportunity to look around the outside – and take a lot of photos! The trips organised by most summer school providers tend to devote a lot of time to shopping. We have to say that we don’t do this! There is at least one free afternoon on every programme for shopping, but this is definitely not the focus of our study visits. Photo tour (UK programmes) This is a slightly different type of study visit. We use a photo competition to help you to explore the best sights of some of the places where you’re staying. Play or concert If you’re taking our course in creative arts, you may have a chance to see a play or to attend a concert. These performances are optional extras, and therefore at extra cost. If you’re not taking this course, you may still be able to go as well, again at extra cost. Accreditation What is the BAC? Please see the following extracts from the BAC website: ‘BAC accreditation is a globally recognised mark of quality achieved through an objective, detailed audit of (an institution’s) processes, policies and systems.’ ‘BAC is widely recognised as the most experienced, rigorous and independent accreditation service for the private education sector.’ ‘(BAC) accreditation is recognised by the UK… Home Office as a qualifying requirement for institutions wishing to enrol students on Student Visitor visas.’ Accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education as a Short Course Provider.
