The one-year, interdisciplinary and fully English taught Master program in American Studies offers exciting research seminars chosen from a wide range of theoretical, historical, social-political, and cultural approaches to the Americas.

None of the academic mono-disciplines (such as History, Literature, and Sociology) provides sufficient tools to give a comprehensive account of the complex dynamics of American culture. This is where American Studies comes in.

The core of this Master's degree is the investigation of nationhood and nationality and the dynamics of cultural change. In this way, the American Studies program at the University of Groningen distinguishes itself from similar programs elsewhere.... [-]

Literary study is socially relevant: from the medieval to the modern, it maps the forces which divide and unite people. The themes of conflict and co-operation are at the core of the Master's track in English Literature and Culture, a programme that allows students a broad choice from a range of modules drawing on the full historical and geographical sweep of English literature.

It is a key tenet of the track that the academic study of English literature can be used to reflect on the ways that people - as individuals and as groups - interact with one another and that it provides a catalyst for insight into contemporary social debates. Literature captures the separation and the solidarity of its writers and audiences in a manner particular to itself: it is a multidisciplinary practice that is as various as the texts it studies. The programme's core themes of conflict and co-operation take their inspiration from the Dutch National Research Agenda which was established by a coalition of academic and business organisations (including the Confederation of Netherlands Industry & Employers, and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research). It is also linked to sustainable society, a research priority of the university.... [-]

Why is it fascinating coming to grips with a globalizing world economy? MA International Relations & International Organization

International Relations as a discipline is almost a century old. Different interpretations exist about its origins, but the general field of IR emerged in response to the consequences of power politics in Europe, culminating in the First World War, and in response to specific research questions within Political Science.

IR in Europe started as an interdisciplinary project, IR in Groningen still follows this tradition. Building on the interdisciplinary Bachelor in International Relations & International Organization, this specialization of the Master International Relations offers a comprehensive study in theory and practice. Theretofore, IRIO uses a 'self-service' model. Besides the mandatory course on advanced theory and the master thesis, you can select from specialized capita and research seminars in four essential areas of International Relations: International Security, International Political Economy, European Integration, and Global Governance. Moreover, to prepare for an international career you can organize an internship at a public or private organization in the field of international relations, where you can apply your knowledge and skills in a 'real-time' environment.... What does the future hold for the European Union? Are its founding ideals of peace and prosperity strong enough to overcome public distrust about further integration? Find out in this programme.

European Integration is one of six tracks within the Master's degree in International Relations.

European integration is a unique phenomenon. Nowhere else in the world have national states decided to a such a far-reaching form of cooperation and 'pooling' of resources as has been the case within the framework of the present-day European Union. Despite the problems the EU is facing nowadays, the economies and currencies, and to a certain extent also the political and social systems of the member countries, have become 'Europeanised' to a considerable extent. This fascinating development is studied in the specialization European Integration in Groningen.... [-]

Global governance relates to the ways in which order is established, maintained and transformed in the global sphere. The study of global governance addresses the problem of how 'orders of governance' are constituted and operated in contemporary and historical settings.

In this track, the order is understood as the outcome of particular ways of managing, organizing and governing global political spaces which can no longer be understood in terms of the absence of an overarching authority. It involves the interaction between interests expressed by governments and international institutions, as well as the role of non-state actors. Historical, constructivist, and post-structuralist methodologies are applied to interpret the interplay between a broad array of dynamic public, private and transnational interests in creating order in the world.... How do actors relate to each other and their natural environment in terms of threats and vulnerabilities? When and how is violence organized? How can possible conflicts be prevented or solved?

International Security, a track of the master International Relations, is aimed at issues of power politics and international order, peace and war, and strategy and diplomacy. Its main focus is the phenomenon of, and theoretical reflection on, 'violence' in its broader context.

Traditionally, attention for warfare and political violence, i.e. military security, has dominated the study of International Security. They still form the central issues. But especially after the Cold War other concerns occupy the agenda, such as environmental security (about climate change or industrial hazards), societal security (about group identities) and economic security (about welfare and development). These different types of concerns have their own meaning when studying the causes of violent conflict, its prevention and management, and conflict resolution and reconciliation.... [-]

MSc Artificial Intelligence

What is intelligent behaviour? How can robots communicate with each other? How to design a system that negotiates? In this programme, you will learn how to design and implement intelligent systems. Humans and animals are important sources of inspiration in this area.

The Master’s programme Artificial Intelligence (AI) focuses on the development of intelligent systems. The core topics in this master are autonomous perceptive systems, cognitive robotics and multi-agent systems.

Systems that can operate and carry out missions independently

Autonomous systems are systems that can operate and carry out missions independently, for example, robots driving around on the moon taking samples and collecting information. Even in unpredictable surroundings these robots respond with a certain intelligence and take decisions about what to do. At the University of Groningen, we concentrate on autonomous perceptive systems, i.e. robots that can find and read a sign in an unknown environment or systems that detect verbal aggression from the complex sounds of busy streets. While traditional AI focuses on cognition and reasoning as isolated abilities, we strongly believe in perception as an active behaviour which is seamlessly integrated into general cognition.... [-]

Tourism as a socio-cultural and spatial phenomenon has become a major constituent of flows of people at different geographical scales.

Tourism geography and planning explores the interactions amongst tourists, visitors, and inhabitants in and with places.

What effects does tourism have on places visited and on the inhabitants of those places? How are tourism destinations socio-culturally and spatially constructed? How do tourists influence and experience spaces, places and cultures? How can regional identities be used in tourism planning, and which role(s) can tourism play in regional development?

These questions will be critically explored in the Masters Track Tourism Geography & Planning. This Track is part of the Masters Programme Cultural Geography which focuses on how place attachment, local qualities and regional identities influence spatial behaviour and perceived quality of life of people and places. The courses are taught in Leeuwarden at RUG/Campus Fryslân. In this Track, the Faculty of Spatial Sciences collaborates with the School of Tourism Management at Stenden University of Applied Sciences.... [-]

MSc in Educational Sciences: Evidence-based Education

Campus Full time 12 months September 2018 Netherlands Groningen

How can we use research evidence to inform educational practice? What factors at the macro, meso and micro levels of the educational system determine the success of educational interventions? [+]

The Master's track 'Evidence-Based Education' aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of how educational research can contribute to the development of effective educational innovations and to the improvement of the quality of education. We strive for education that promotes the academic, meta-cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioural outcomes of all students, regardless of their background characteristics and learning abilities. Stable educational improvement can only occur if there is a solid knowledge base to feed educational practice, from macro (e.g., policy), meso (e.g., school organization) to micro levels (e.g., classroom processes). Bridging the gap between research and educational practice requires graduates that can understand, assess and generate solid evidence, and can translate these insights into educational initiatives that are fully responsive to the societal issues and contexts in which they are embedded....
