Introduction

The University of Siena awards first cycle, second cycle and single long cycle degrees in the following 15 Departments: Department of Medical biotechnologies, Department of Molecular and developmental medicine, Department of Medicine, surgery and neuroscience, Department of Economics and statistics, Department of Law, Department of Political and international sciences, Department of Business and law, Department of Biotechnology, chemistry and pharmacy, Department of Information engineering and mathematics, Department of Life sciences, Department of Physical sciences, Earth and environment, Department of Philology and literary criticism, Department of Education, human sciences and intercultural communication, Department of Social, political and cognitive sciences, Department of History and cultural heritage. Furthermore several interfaculty degrees are available. Postgraduate education at the University of Siena is carried out in postgraduate schools. Vocational and advanced master’s programmes (third cycle), training, advanced training and refresher courses and summer schools, while postgraduate research is performed in the doctoral schools.

The University of Siena has set up Doctoral Programmes for young people with particular expertise in the field of research who wish to obtain the qualification of PhD. The Doctoral Programmes offer a wide variety of programmes on specific scientific topics, carried out at the Santa Chiara Graduate School.

Admission to the Doctoral Programmes is subject to a selection process, which is open to those in possession of an Italian second cycle degree (or degree awarded under the previous Italian system) or an equivalent qualification awarded by a foreign university.

Scientific research is carried out within the University’s departments, which are organized into one or more research sectors according to their aims or methods. Within each sector, research activities are launched and coordinated and proposals are defined for the establishment and organization of doctoral research programmes. The consultancy and research activities carried out at the University for third parties are also usually performed within the departments.

Student services

Based on a special agreement with the University of Siena, the Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario (DSU-Toscana) promotes various cultural and recreational activities for university students.

This Regional Agency also runs students’ scholarships, university apartments and canteens.

The DSU-Toscana encourages students to participate in theatrical and musical events by offering contributions, reduced rates, partial reimbursements of cinema season tickets or passes and organises other cultural initiatives such as guided tours of museums and the area.

Housing services

Limited number of places at the University Residences owned by the Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio (Regional Office for the Right to Higher Education) are reserved for International exchange students. Almost all of the rooms are twin rooms with 2 beds. The current price per person is 297,00 Euros per month.

Medical services

EU students with an European Health Insurance Card can use the public health service Azienda Sanitaria Locale. They can choose a doctor for the entire period of stay at the University Front Office.

For appointments with a specialist can go to the public health centre.

Sports facilities

In collaboration with the Regional Authority for Higher Education Grants (Azienda Regionale per il Diritto allo Studio Universitario - ARDSU) and Siena University Sports Centre (CUS), the University promotes sports for students by offering courses for free or at reduced rates in: basketball, football, volleyball, rugby, judo, weight training, fencing and tennis.

The Italian University System

The Italian university system is organised in three cycles, according to the Bologna structure: themain academic degrees are the Laurea (BACHELOR’S DEGREE, 1st cycle, duration 3 years, 180 Credits), the Laurea Magistrale (MASTER’S DEGREE, 2nd cycle, duration 2 years, 120 credits) and the Dottorato di Ricerca (DOCTORAL PROGRAMME, 3rd cycle, duration 3 years).

This is a 2-year graduate programme entirely taught in English, offered to both national and international students.

The MSc in Applied Mathematics aims at providing high-level competences for the formalization and the consequent mathematical analysis of problems arising from applied sciences and technologies, with a special focus on the analysis of big data systems and complex systems.

The program provides courses which complete the basic mathematical competences, covering all the main areas of Mathematics (Mathematical Logic, Algebra, Geometry, Mathematical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Optimizations, Foundations of Mathematics). Then, the student has a choice of courses focused in areas where the support of advanced mathematical methods is fundamental in recent scientific researches and developing technologies. These courses cover topics such as the theory of formal languages, discrete methods in Mathematics, the applications of data analysis, bioinformatics and information systems for understanding structures in big data systems and networks, the techniques for modeling, analyzing and simulating complex dynamic systems, discrete event systems and nonlinear control systems.
