THE ROOTS

NABA was originally founded in Milan in 1980 by Ausonio Zappa, Guido Ballo and Tito Varisco. The trio wanted to change the rigid academic traditions of the past by introducing new visions and languages based on contemporary artistic practice and the creative professions. In 1981 NABA was officially recognised by the Ministry of Education, University & Research.

Another of the famous names to be associated with the school was Gianni Colombo, who later became the Director of the Academy from 1985 to 1993 and really helped to shape NABA’s educational philosophy, making it as contemporary as it is today.

THE ’90S – MOVING INTERNATIONAL

In 1990 the Academy underwent an internationalisation process, leading to NABA joining ELIA (European League of Institutes of the Arts). Later, in 1995 the Academy received the very most prestigious of awards from The Mayor of Milan, who awarded NABA the Certificate of Civic Merit with the following accolade: “NABA has grown in prestige and fame and has become the Italian reference point for Fine Arts Academies in Europe and Internationally.”
