European University Institute (EUI)

Introduction

The European University Institute (EUI) is a transnational hub for interdisciplinary research and higher learning, situated on the hills near Florence, Italy. The Institute is composed of four departments—Economics, History and Civilisation, Law, and Political and Social Sciences; the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies; the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies; the School of Transnational Governance; and the Historical Archives of the European Union.

The EUI is the leading institute in Europe dedicated to social sciences and humanities. Founded in 1972 by the six original members of the then European Communities, the EUI has earned a reputation as a transnational hub of research and higher learning.

Our Mission

The EUI’s outstanding doctoral, postdoctoral, master, and executive education programs, combined with our vibrant community of more than 1000 scholars from over 60 countries, create an empowering, intellectual climate where students and researchers can contribute to the betterment of society.

The EUI is perfectly placed to generate new insights that help our societies move forward.

Professor Renaud Dehousse
EUI President

Each year, approximately 150 new Ph.D. researchers embark on a research-intensive doctoral program in our departments of Economics, History and Civilisation, Law, and Political and Social Sciences. The EUI is also home to the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSC), founded in 1992 to carry out research on the major issues facing Europe, and to bridge the world of academia and practice through interdisciplinary and applied research.

The Max Weber Programme is the largest and most innovative international postdoctoral program in the Social Sciences and Humanities in Europe. It offers approximately 60 fully-funded Fellowships to qualified researchers worldwide working in or across the relevant disciplines of the EUI.

The EUI’s School of Transnational Governance (STG), established in 2017, prepares current and future leaders in policy-making beyond the state. In September 2020, our first group of students started the two-year Master in Transnational Governance . STG also offers a policy leader fellowship program and executive education. The EUI campus proudly hosts the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), which provides an unparalleled insight into the workings of the European Union.
