About Us

Campus El Gouna was established to act as a scientific and academic field office of Technische Universität Berlin on the Red Sea in Egypt. In its new satellite Campus in El Gouna, TU Berlin offers three Master degree programs and furthermore great possibilities for science, research and development and events of all kind. Campus El Gouna is a unique public-private partnership (PPP) project in the field of education export. It was financed by TUB alumnus Samih Sawiris and opened its doors in October 2012.

Profile

The research Campus El Gouna is a scientific field office of Technische Universität Berlin in Egypt in the heart of the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. It provides a fully equipped environment for studying, research and development as well as for cultural and scientific events.

The three 2-year Master programs play a central role in the Campus profile. Teams of up to 90 students per year study under supervision of and in cooperation with about 40 experts in the fields of Energy Engineering, Water Engineering and Urban Development to create sustainable solutions for the challenges in the MENA region. The Campus offers the perfect conditions for the students to learn, research, discuss and experiment.

As a place for research and development, the Campus provides a state-of-the-art environment to develop sustainable and applicable technologies to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. It brings together TU Berlin's experts as well as the future professionals within the lab-like emerging city of El Gouna.

Joint activities with corporate partners such as innovative forms of training and further education as well as research and development play an important role for Campus El Gouna as well. It serves as an interdisciplinary incubator for new approaches to technology and knowledge transfer for strengthening societal awareness and entrepreneurial initiatives.

Centrally located in the MENA region at the Red Sea, TU Berlin Campus El Gouna - together with the town of El Gouna - is a perfect place for scientific events such as workshops, conventions and conferences on emerging topics.

The broad range of different activities makes TU Berlin Campus El Gouna a scientific and cultural hub between Europe and the MENA region.

Information technologies and their implementation in the energy sector is a challenging topic that grasps more and more attention as it is urgently needed for implementation in energy industry. The Information Technologies for Energy program at TU Berlin Campus El Gouna is a newly introduced master program, unique in its kind in the MENA region. The ITE program deals with the design, development, optimization and realization of renewable energy and fossil fuel-based energy-conversion plants with the support of information technologies. Meanwhile the ITE program covers the application of information technologies developed in the energy domain. Main application areas are electricity generation, energy storage and energy consumption management. Master of Science in Urban Development (UD) Background and Challenges Urban growth is extensively transforming the face of the planet. For the first time in human history, more than half of the world's population now lives in towns and cities. With an average growth rate of 2.1% per annum from 1990-2003, the MENA region has one of the world’s most rapidly expanding populations, increasingly concentrated in urban areas. Cities in both the MENA region and other parts of the world are engines of growth, providing a disproportionate share of income opportunities and access to services. At the same time, cities are places of growing social and economic inequality, with increasing numbers of people living in poverty and deteriorating living conditions. Furthermore, urbanization also poses a significant challenge in the 21st century, with an estimated 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions linked to urban areas. The enormous contribution of urban areas to global greenhouse gas emissions is set to increase even more. Tasks and Objectives The challenges surrounding urban growth require theoretical approaches and operational tools that are properly geared to the specific social, economic and institutional conditions of a specific region. In addition, urban low carbon concepts in recognition of local resources, know-how and management capacities are essential elements of an effective planning strategy for the future. Master of Science in Water Engineering (WE) Welcome to the Master's program of Water Engineering The advanced Master's program in Water Engineering at Campus El Gouna, the physical branch of TU Berlin at the Red Sea, provides outstanding education in key sectors of an integrated water resource management. The novel program in Water Engineering is deeply rooted in the long-standing tradition of the TU Berlin, designed for the specific requirements of (semi-)arid countries and regions, e.g. groundwater management, water/wastewater treatment and treated wastewater reuse. On the successful completion of the program, students will graduate with an official Master of Science in Water Engineering from TU Berlin. Background and Challenges In the last decades, water resources have been under increased pressure, caused by the gap between the need for water and its availability in terms of both its quality and quantity. This is a particular problem in arid and semiarid regions. Beyond traditional sectors where water is in high demand, this phenomenon is being intensified by rapidly growing populations, increased agricultural irrigation for food production, intensified urbanization and climate change. To overcome this dilemma, a water resources management that follows an integrated and interdisciplinary approach is widely proposed, including sustainable capacity building.
