The BTK University of Art & Design is a private, officially recognized University located in Berlin. BTK inspires challenges and trains the creative minds of the future in two Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs – Communication Design and Photography – as well as in the Master of Arts (M.A.) study program Design / Media Spaces.
The rapid digitalization of media has changed the professional role of designers during the last twenty years, making it more challenging and more varied. At BTK, modern design is combined with the traditional aspects of applied art and the innovative possibilities of new media. BTK offers interdisciplinary study programs, which enable students to explore the interface of both analogue and digital means of visual expression, and in so doing, help them to influence and determine the future of design. Modern designers work within a variety of disciplines and in international teams. Our students learn to think creatively, analytically and scientifically. In the overlapping fields of art, design and technology, students are encouraged to develop their design expertise individually, multi-disciplinarily and practically. Our graduates begin their professional careers with the ability to communicate as designers combined with a desire to experiment creatively.
Our Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) study programs – Communication Design and Photography – are completed in seven semesters. The Bachelor of Arts programs provide qualifications for a professional career in the future-oriented media economy. BTK also offers the Master of Arts (M.A.) study program in Design / Media Spaces, which is completed in three semesters. The Master of Arts study program provides a qualification for an artistic or design-based professional career, as a freelance or in a leading role in a company.
The University is located in Berlin. The Berlin campus of the BTK is situated in the creative center of the capital, near to Potsdamer Platz and the Sony Centre, on the edge of the vibrant Kreuzberg district and close to many cultural highlights such as the New National Art Gallery.
EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
We make available to our students a comprehensive range of media technology. In the area of digital photography, equipment such as the Canon 5 D Mk2, Phase One Digital Back Pieces, cameras and mobile editing suites can be loaned. Our facilities include studios for photography and video editing, a sound studio and a green screen studio, as well as modern lighting equipment and W-LAN. In the area of computer technology, BTK has over 100 Apple Mac workstations, a permanent Internet connection and the additional flexibility offered by over 50 Apple MacBook Pro laptops available for loan during seminars. This equipment and these technical facilities provide students with the necessary support for contemporary and successful design programs. Our library consists of an extensive collection of art and design textbooks and current publications, as well as books related to specific aspects of new media. Alongside traditional literature, BTK's library has a well-developed and constantly growing collection of DVDs and CDs, specifically in the areas of film and motion graphics.
PRACTICAL AND CAREER-BASED
What designers today need for a successful career start in the media industry is what they receive from BTK. Our professors and lecturers all work professionally in their various fields of expertise. Studying in small groups, our students learn all that they will need to prepare them for a successful creative future. Students learn both from the practical experience of their lecturers at BTK and also, during their 5th Semester, from an internship in the creative industry, in which the abilities gained during the course of studies are tested in the professional world of design. This practical experience impresses future employers and enables our graduates to be best prepared for the start of their professional careers. Equally important in terms of practical experience are the design competitions, which we regularly run in cooperation with well-known companies and institutions. Through these competitions, as well as the conceptual and creative work, all aspects of a design project can be experienced and tested to ensure a successful outcome, such as project planning, budgeting, resource planning and time management. By winning numerous design awards, BTK students and lecturers demonstrate that this course concept is effective.
At the start of every study program are the basics and we teach these to provide the foundation for a solid training in design. This includes not only the basic understanding of rhythm and composition, colour and light, knowledge of art and design history, but also developing academic study methodologies and competent use of the computer software used in the creative industry: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. As all Bachelor of Arts programs at BTK share the same foundation modules, all the students from the various courses are mixed together – in this way all the students get to know each other and experience multidisciplinary work right from the start. Following successful completion of the foundation semester, students can select their focus of study and begin to develop their own creative personality.
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs at BTK provide qualifications for a future professional career, for example, as a Web Designer, as a Photographer or Filmmaker, as a Photo Editor, as an Art Director, as a Graphic Designer in a design studio, advertising agency, magazine and publishing company, and so on. The Master of Arts (M.A.) study program at the BTK provides an additional qualification for management positions in the design industry or an academic career in the field of design education.
