Coburg University of Applied Sciences

Germany Coburg October 2017

Profile Coburg University is a public university financed by Bavarian State Ministry of Education, Science and the Arts. As its English translation “University of Applied Sciences and Arts” suggests, a Hochschule is characterized by practice-related teaching and research as well as a strong practical bias. Its educational philosophy is designed to enable its students to apply their theoretical knowledge and methodological know-how to solving concrete problems in the… [+] ir professional careers. During their studies the students at Coburg University are systematically trained to develop those skills. To make sure that students never lose sight of the practical relevance of what they are learning, both full-time and part-time faculty are required to have gained ample experience in leading positions of business and administration. With the exception of art-related programs, the standard length of bachelor’s degree programs is seven semesters, one of which is, as a rule, in an internship. The practice-oriented approach to teaching is demonstrated by a required internship the small size of classes allowing individual attention to be given to students lab and field work, simulation games, project-centered education, and field trips the faculty’s wide range of practical experience A few numbers Organization 6 academic departments 1 Academic Center for Sciences and Humanities 5 scientific institutions Academic Programs 20 bachelor’s programs, including 8 dual programs 16 master’s programs, including 2 international master’s programs 97 international partner universities Students 5,000 students (50 % female, 50 % male) 100 scholarship recipients 900 graduates (per year) Personnel 120 professors 2 endowed professorships 500 staff members in teaching, research and administration Practical experience while studying As recent studies on the career of university graduates show, only those who have combined theory with practice while studying are prepared for a positive start in their career. At the Coburg University all undergraduate programs include a required internship. Project work – oftentimes across disciplinary boundaries – is part of student life. And seminars and projects with companies and social institutions are common components of our programs of study. The Coburg University is in intensive contact with professionals. In addition, all professors must have worked for several years in their field before being appointed to the university. The professors’ practical experience benefits the students, especially in their projects and theses, in which they must solve problems with a high degree of practical relevance. The big picture At the very core of science and education are curiosity and the joy of exploration. The wider the field of vision, the more there is to discover: The Coburg University is doing its part to ensure that students can develop to their full potential. The Academic Center for Sciences and Humanities offers a wide range of lectures and seminars in various academic fields, such as philosophy, history, natural and human sciences, and languages. Experts and periodically report on their fields. Learning about culture – and learning through culture itself – is something our students do in a variety of initiatives. These include the cultural offering “Caution Feeling”, the university choir, the cabaret group and the debating society. Interdisciplinary and individual - the Coburg way The demands of studying are increasing: Young people are expected to begin studying earlier, to acquire a great deal of knowledge in a short time and to develop their social skills. In our opinion, this is only possible in an integrated model. Groups of students from a variety of programs cooperate to complete interdisciplinary projects that are integrated into the programs of study, thereby honing their soft skills, such as communication and teamwork. They learn to recognize what is important in solving problems and to use their knowledge effectively. At the same time, the individual support of students is becoming more and more important. This is because access to higher education is now very diverse. Students come to the university with different strengths and weaknesses: one has completed a vocational education program without academic preparation in secondary school, another has a foundation of theoretical knowledge but little practical experience. To compensate for this, we offer our students comprehensive individual counseling services. This interdisciplinary program with the individual attention it provides to students is the cornerstone of „The Coburg Way“. This project has been fully funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research over several years. Family friendly University "As humans, we need family-friendliness." This aspect of our mission statement is reflected in the certificate "Family Friendly University". As one of the first universities in Germany, in 2007 Coburg University received the basic certificate from berufundfamilie gGmbH, an initiative of the Hertie Foundation. A re-audit took place in 2014. Students, teachers and employees are equally involved in the auditing process. The topic "Compatibility of family and studies or work" is a central concern of Coburg University. By improving the conditions, students and university staff who take on family responsibilities are equally supported. Family friendliness is not only aimed at families with children. Rather it also includes the increasing proportion of families who assume responsibility for the care of relatives. Students and staff receive support in the Family Office of the university. [-]

MSc Germany Wuppertal October 2017

Founded in 1972, the University of Wuppertal (UW) is still young. Its twin goals are academic excellence in its individual disciplines and the consistent development of the interface between these disciplines and the world of practical experience – in a word, the transfer of knowledge and technological know-how. With a combination of disciplines that is somewhat unconventional for a German university, UW offers interesting possibilities – for example in subject combinations for… [+] teaching degrees, in interdisciplinary cooperations between the Faculties of Engineering and Economics, or in the field of Safety Engineering, where UW's degree program is unique in Germany. The university's reputation as a force in business and industry goes beyond its role in regional economics. Its business startup and marketing program provides young entrepreneurs with a first class springboard that once again in 2007 – as in 2005 – won Wuppertal number one position in the German university rankings. Vision The University of Wuppertal is a modern, independent university in the Humboldtean tradition. Teaching and research profiles The establishment of specific research and teaching profiles serves the purpose of bundling existing strengths, developing new synergies, and enhancing the impact of the university across the whole range of its achievements and potentialities. The three university campuses UW has three campuses. The Main Grifflenberg Campus and the Freudenberg Campus & guesthouse are situated on the southern side of the Wupper valley. The Main Grifflenberg Campus is on Gauss Str. and the Freudenberg Campus is on Rainer-Gruenter-Str. The Haspel Campus is in Unterbarmen (Haspeler Str. / Pauluskirchstr.). History of the University The University of Wuppertal was established in 1972 as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian (NRW) drive to create a practically oriented (or 'comprehensive') higher education sector. Already existing HE institutions in the region, like the Schools of Engineering, Industrial Art, and Education, were assimilated into the new format and expanded to incorporate new departments. A leading figure in this development was the locally born then NRW Minister of Science and Research, later Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and Federal German President, Johannes Rau. In 2003 the so-called 'Comprehensive University of Wuppertal' was re-styled simply 'University of Wuppertal'. The initial 3473 students by now numbered 20,000. A main focus of degree programs remained on the traditional Wuppertal subjects of engineering and science on the one hand and art and design on the other, with economics and the humanities given new prominence and state examinations for future school teachers offered in a wide variety of subjects. The roots of the UW Faculty of Engineering, as of the Faculty of Art and Design, go back well into the 19th century. [-]

Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H)

MA Germany Witten October 2017

Witten/Herdecke University (UW/H) was founded and state recognized in 1983 and ever since has been a pioneer among Germany’s higher education institutions. Over a period of 30 years, we introduced significant innovations in research and teaching. As a model university we stand for dynamic reforms of the traditional alma mater and the pursuit of a humanistic educational concept adapted to the challenges of our modern knowledge society. In adherence to Humboldt’s educational ide… [+] als we perceive ourselves as an entrepreneurial university and strive to integrate research and student education, provision of scientific services, practical application and social responsibility. Theory-based and practice-oriented teaching at UW/H is always associated with the acquisition of subject-related, methodical, social and cultural competences, value orientation and personal growth. Witten researches. Research at UW/H is interdisciplinary, highly diverse as to methodology, and focuses on well-defined areas. As a private university with a moderate percentage of state funding in our budget, we feel obliged to contribute something to society in return for the funds we receive. One way to do so is to generate innovative research results. Real-life problems call for transdisciplinary research. The social relevance of our chosen fields of research is as important in this respect as transparent and generally understandable publication of research findings. Numerous UW/H projects are third-party financed. Over 40 applications for third-party funds were successful in 2010 alone. Our researchers cooperate with renowned national and international partners. All UW/H Faculties strive to address new and previously unexplored research areas and thereby to trigger significant developments. Witten educates. Education is much more than training for the job. In addition to subject-related expertise and skills, we also convey methods and strategies which enable our students for the rest of their lives to cope with complex and permanently changing demands of the modern knowledge society, either as generalists with specialization competences or as specialists with a broad general basis of knowledge. In line with the Witten didactics, student education is problem oriented, state-of-the-art and close to practice. Personal growth is another of our core objectives. Interdisciplinary – undisciplined Following Humboldt’s educational concepts, UW/H students study in small groups with an excellent student-teacher ratio and sufficient time and space to discover their talents and potentials and form their own opinions. Students are encouraged to think in wider contexts and assume social responsibility in and beyond a chosen discipline. The economic, ecological and social challenges of the future will certainly not respect the boundaries of academic disciplines. Witten – fundamental. Fundamental studies are a core element of the Witten/Herdecke identity. They foster out-of-the-box thinking. They embody the university’s guiding idea and facilitate learning processes beyond subject-related expertise. Here students tackle questions for which we have no ready answers, or for which there may be no answers at all. Education needs protracted reflection and a change of perspective, needs alienation and distance from self and the world. Fundamental studies offer this opportunity to call a halt. They constitute an undisciplined and decelerated approach to a wealth of perspectives between reflection, communication and art. Fundamental studies are the contemporary successor of ancient schools of the art of life and studia humanitatis. Among Germany’s universities the UW/H fundamental studies are the oldest and most sophisticated model that integrates academic issues and questions related to society, the arts, social justice, concern for one’s personal future, politics, psychology, philosophy and history, and assesses their relevance for an individual’s attitude, actions and conduct of life. In an increasingly complex, rapidly changing and insecure world, prospective physicians, entrepreneurs, managers, politicians or consultants need methodical, social, ethical and cultural competences as much as subject-related expertise. Witten gets involved. The role of higher education in society underwent radical changes in recent years. Research and teaching are still core activities at universities. But today we expect more. Civic engagement as the “third mission” in addition to research and student education has always been part of UW/H identity. At the founding ceremony of Witten/Herdecke University, Alfred Herrhausen spoke of “esprit engagé, a dedicated spirit to be developed and employed for the fostering of our society”. This spirit is an essential part of our philosophy and attaches equal importance to social responsibility, student education and generation of innovative research results. Right from the start Witten/Herdecke University assumed social responsibility in many forms and on various levels. Witten/Herdecke University is in a continuous lively exchange with the community: with Witten’s citizens, the local and regional business world, social and cultural institutions, even international organizations, corporations and foundations. In view of our tender age and a comparably small number of 1.300 enrolled students and 400 staff, we have produced an impressive number of social, cultural, commercial and non-profit initiatives. Witten works. Despite Bologna reforms, increasing economic constraints for universities and new degree programs for formerly non-academic professions, Witten/Herdecke University still offers the freedom of studies that are theory-based and close to practice, ethical and aesthetic, speedy or relaxed, dissident and unconditional, interdisciplinary and undisciplined. And if Harvard University President Drew G. Faust is right in her belief that university culture is essentially undisciplined and that this should be the starting point for future universities, then we seem well-positioned at UW/H. Accordingly Witten/Herdecke University understands itself as an unconditionally undisciplined university in the sense proclaimed by Drew and Derrida, and as a place of critical thinking. Witten makes a difference, Witten works: in research, teaching and in society. In – and at the interfaces of – health, economics and culture. [-]

University Bridging Business, Culture, and Politics Why ZU? The major questions that we are facing - both at present and in the future - are too complex and interlinked to allow for a unidimensional answer. The increasing social, political, economic, cultural, ecological, and medial interlinking of our world requires a place of common discourse. And the university is this place. It has a special function in the 21st century: LakeCam… [+] pus at Seemooser Horn, located right on the shores of Lake Constance. It has to be a place where every question is allowed. It has to be a place of freedom and a place of personal development. It has to be a place of intellectual discourse that brings scholars, students, and society together. It has to be an active part of society, have an impact on society, and contribute to solving social and societal questions. It has to be interdisciplinary, yet at the same time rooted in academic disciplines. This is exactly the reason why Zeppelin University was founded - and deliberately as a foundation university. It sets itself apart as - since its founding in 2003 - interdisciplinarity has been engraved into its DNA. Thinking in a problem- and solution-oriented way between business, culture, and politics, and not just being stuck in social thought patterns and academic disciplines opens your perspective on socially relevant solutions. This is the approach that defines us here at ZU. Together we start out to think beyond borders. It is a great privilege to shape this unique educational institution together with other parties. Students, scholars, the administrative staff, and our sponsors and partners all act in concert and in open exchange to fill this idea of our university with life. The role model for our actions is Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, after whom we are named. He was a pioneer of aviation. With his strong will, he held on to his idea of conquering the skies - even though he faced setbacks. He believed in himself and in his vision. And he reached his aim:"You only have to want it and believe in it, and then it will succeed." For us, this is more than just a nice-sounding sentence. It is the maxim that we act on. It is our main task to offer students, scholars, and members of staff the unique chance to develop their skills in such a way that they are able to reach their own goals and to find solutions to the challenges of our times. This is the orientation of all structures and processes of ZU: interdisciplinary, in an inspiring community, with a lot of room for personal development, and a great pioneering spirit. Whether we will be able to answer all questions of today and tomorrow - this is something we are not sure of. Yet, we are sure that we want to try. And if we only want this strongly enough, it will succeed. [-]

The university is also firmly anchored in national and international networks in the areas of academia, research and the professional world. On the following pages we will introduce you to… [+] the features that give the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences its distinctive character.     Creating lively cooperationLively cooperation among (professional) associations, agencies and organizations is a characteristic feature of the successful transfer from theory to practice and of the research-intense application-oriented institution of higher education.  For instance, the Fröbel Group finances an endowed chair in the Early Childhood Education programme at ASH Berlin. University teachers engage in joint research with childcare facilities or partner universities to examine current questions of social or health policy or issues relating to early childhood education.  Students, too, through their internship semesters and volunteer work, some of which takes place in Hellersdorf, make valuable contributions to the exchange between science and professional practice. Within the framework of the “ASH Builds Potential” mentoring programme, students take on mentoring roles for other students or school pupils with immigrant backgrounds.Regular lecture series within the bachelors and masters programmes represent an opportunity to participate in in-depth discussions on a range of topics. That opportunity is not limited to university members: interested professional colleagues from outside the university also take up the invitation to take part in the lively exchange of opinions at the university. Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE)

Master Germany Berlin France Nice Belgium Brussels October 2017 + 2 more

The Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) was created in 1954. Its founders, in particular Alexandre Marc, understood the urgent necessity to train professionals and citizens in the subject of a united Europe. CIFE is a private non-profit-making international organisation which includes several European studies courses as well as conferences, seminars and publications.   The programmes of the Centre international de formation européenne (CIFE) encompass ed… [+] ucational and research activities concerning European integration, federalism, regionalism and changes within the structures of contemporary society in accordance with a federalist prospective.   CIFE receives the support of the European Union and other international organisations, of numerous national governments as well as regional and local authorities, foundations, and private contributors.     Over the course of the years, CIFE has become an organisation without rival. We offer postgraduate university courses; summer university programmes; general education by means of seminars and international apprenticeships; the furthering of knowledge and debate in conferences; the transmission of information and communication by means of our review L’Europe en formation and our various other publications.   This abundant activity has been nurtured over the course of the successive EU enlargements and has often anticipated these. In this way, as early as the end of the 1980s, CIFE multiplied its conferences and summer sessions from Prague to Moscow, from Vilnius to Budapest and then on to Sofia, and trained in its institute in Nice numerous students who have gone on to become today’s professionals in a new Europe.   Finally, CIFE has opened itself to the challenges new Europe has presented by complementing the natural openness which Nice offers towards Western Europe and the Mediterranean with the openness in Berlin towards Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea and the openness in Istanbul towards Turkey and beyond.   The culmination of our activities has been made possible thanks to the support of local, regional and national authorities, business and foundations, the largest of international organisations but most of all thanks to the confidence that leaders of the European Communities have placed in CIFE from the very beginning and which the EU has continually and resolutely supported.   This unparalleled assessment of service to a peaceful, prosperous and more just Europe owes much to CIFE’s presidents: Étienne Hirsh, Jean Rey, Gaston Thorn, Lord Thomson, Émile Noël, Michel Albert… It also owes much to those who have been Directors, Alexandre Marc then Ferdinand Kinsky and all their collaborators, expert as much as loyal, to their objective.
