A multidisciplinary university

The University of Pau and Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) is a multidisciplinary university which covers three major areas of study:

  • Law, economics, business, management
  • Science and technology
  • literature, languages, arts, social sciences and humanities and sport

UPPA offers its students initial or continuing education, work/study programmes or apprenticeships, to obtain Bachelor’s, Master’s and vocational degrees and Doctorates through its 5 UFRs (Teaching and Research units) and two Doctoral schools.

The university also includes two IUTs (University Institute of Technology), one IAE (University School of Management), two engineering schools (ENSGTI, covering industrial technology engineering and ISA BTP covering construction), a continuing education department and an apprenticeship training centre.

An ideal working environment

One of the particular features of UPPA is its location close to the Spanish border, between the mountains and the ocean, on 5 campuses on a very human scale: Anglet, Bayonne, Pau, Mont-de-Marsan and Tarbes.

Each campus offers students modern and efficient means of communication, a university library, sports activities, a cultural programme and a range of student associations.

The teaching teams at UPPA prepare our 11,500 students to complete their course, but they are also attentive to the needs of students and are always available, and committed to our quality process.

Careers guidance and professional advice are also at the heart of each study programme: student professional project, meetings with former students, job fairs, help with finding internships and jobs.

For the second year running, the Ministry has ranked UPPA 12th nationally (out of 80 universities) for student support and success in their degree courses, and 18th for their masters.

Scientific research at international level

With 24 research units associated with research bodies such as the CNRS, INRA and INRIA, research at UPPA covers :

A university firmly rooted in its region

Since its foundation in 1970, UPPA has formed relationships with local institutional and industrial partners, making it a major player in the economic development of southern Aquitaine.

It has forged some very strong links with major contractors, such as Total, Turboméca, Arkema, Toyal, Messier-Dowty and it supports SME/SMI through a hundred collaboration agreements.

UPPA is also supported by local authorities and is part of ComUEA, the Community of Universities and Higher Education Establishments in Aquitaine. It is also a member of SATT Aquitaine (Aquitaine Sciences Transfer)

A university open to the world

Because of its geographic situation, UPPA is particularly well placed to develop original cross-border cooperation with Spain, by setting up:

  • the PYREN Project: IDEFI (Initiative for excellence in innovative training) funded by “investment for the future” from the government,
  • specific bursaries,
  • internships in companies,
  • 10 double degrees and joint thesis supervisions (34 in 2015).

UPPA hosts 1,700 international students and offers its own students the opportunity for international mobility through its many partnerships:

  • 51 partner countries worldwide,
  • 80 inter-university cooperation agreements,
  • 179 Erasmus partner universities.

Energy and Environment, keywords for the I-SITE project run by UPPA

As part of the “Future Investments” programme launched by the government, UPPA submitted a proposal for the I-SITE project (Initiatives – Science – Innovation – Territories – Economy) with The E2S – Energy Environment Solutions project. Pre-selected in June 2016, the project is based on a consortium with the INRA and lnria linked to the region’s strong private and public R&D potential.

The consortium will run this project on the energy and environmental transition, in synergy with companies (Total, Arkema, TIGF and Safran Helicopter Engines) and academic partners (CEA, the CNRS, the University of the Basque Country and the University of Saragossa). E2S is also supported by local governments: the Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes Région, the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Landes Départements, the Pau Béarn Pyrénées Communauté d'agglomération, the Mont-de-Marsan Agglomération, and the Lacq-Orthez and Basque Communautés de communes.

E2S teams will meet challenges related to the energy transition, geo-resources, aquatic habitats and the environmental effects of natural and anthropogenic changes, in line with research and innovation developments by major industrial partners. The objective is to break down targeted scientific barriers (storage of CO2, production of biogas, new batteries, development of fully electric plane…).

Specialists in Sciences, Humanities, Sociology and Law will thus increase UPPA’s international attractiveness in cutting-edge fields with the world’s top institutions (Stanford, Berkeley, MIT…) in particular through joint chairs; a still higher quality policy, postgraduate courses taught in English in the E2S field.

The project also involves changes in the university’s governance and organisation, which will move towards a structure based on three major faculties, each including teaching, research and innovation. Particular effort will be made regarding human resources to increase the number of academic researchers in E2S themes. Local industrial partnerships will complement the strengths of the consortium, giving significant leverage to research and innovation in these fields.

The CCCE track focuses on the modeling and simulation of coastal engineering related processes. Topics extensively studied include, wave modeling, waves interactions with structures, soil and structure complex behavior. A specific focus is put on numerical methods and open source computational tools commonly used in this field including: Telemac 2D, Artemis, OpenFOAM, BOSZ (Boussinesq wave model), XBEACH, Cast3M (finite element structure model).

This track belongs to the international master’s degree in Physics and Simulation in Civil Engineering which offers multidisciplinary key courses to achieve an advanced specialist level in the aforementioned fields. The aim of the programme “Evolutionary Ecology in Aquatic Environments” is to train scientific experts able to design experiments and models in order to produce knowledge in evolutionary ecology relevant to the management of aquatic ecosystems. It is backed by the Federation for Research in water resources and aquatic ecosystems (MIRA) which includes research experts and skills in the fields of evolutionary response of aquatic species to anthropic pressures and modelling of aquatic populations and ecosystems.

Course Organization

The programme one-year training programme is composed of 1) a semester of eight courses (30 ECTS) covering evolutionary ecology, population dynamics, behavioural ecology, habitat restoration, space and time series analysis, sampling strategies, research initiation and language (French or Spanish), and 2) a 6-month-long internship (30 ECTS) in a research laboratory. Overview

The selection and appropriate use of a material require chemical expertise that draws on knowledge of the material preparation and characterization sectors and training in interpretation and modeling of the structural and functional properties of materials. Designed specifically for students taking courses in which chemistry is the predominant subject, the CPCM curriculum offers training courses in each of these different sectors. Overview The Master of Petroleum Engineering, offered at Pau (France), is the sole Academic training in France of oil and gas which covers industrial careers in exploration, research, development, and production. The Master offers a classical 2-year training in French for undergraduate and graduate students and a 1-year training in English for graduate students. The 2-year MASTER of Petroleum Engineering offers three distinct training programs: Geosciences, Reservoirs and Production. These training programs (~1000 h lecture and internship) cover all fields in petroleum engineering. Each year about 40 to 50 students graduate. The 1-year class ‘Petroleum Engineering Reinforcement’ (~350 h lecture and internship) will be particularly appreciated by foreign students who wish to reinforce their background in different fields of petroleum engineering.
