Introduction

The Philosophical Faculty is one of the four Faculties at the University of Eastern Finland. The Faculty emphasises internationality and multidisciplinarity and works for the advancement of education for the public good according to the principles of the University of Eastern Finland. Its special mission is to conduct scientific research and offer research based academic education in the fields of educational sciences and psychology, home economics and craft science, linguistics and cultural studies.

The Faculty serves not only Eastern Finland but the whole country and the international scientific community as well. In certain areas of education, theology, languages and culture the Faculty has an expressly defined national mission. The Faculty also strives to provide its services to the society as a whole by providing expertise and education in the fields it represents for the advancement of the social, economic and cultural well-being of Eastern Finland in particular.

MDP in English Language and Culture

This programme, taught entirely in English and aimed at international applicants, seeks to provide an opportunity to study English from a variety of literary and linguistic perspectives. The degree consists of coursework and a research thesis. The objectives of the programme include in-depth understanding of the multifacetedness of contemporary English studies; increased awareness of key debates in contemporary linguistics and literary studies; and an ability to carry out independent research. There are overall 15 study places available for international students. During their studies, students will specialize in linguistics or literary and cultural studies. The Department has internationally recognized areas of strength in both linguistics and literary studies. In linguistics, these include dialectology, language contact, language variation and change, pragmatics, and bilingualism. In literary and cultural studies, the Department's areas of strength include postcolonial and ethnic literature, American literature, popular fiction, and contemporary fiction.... [-]

Master in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication

The two-year International Master's Degree Programme in Early Language Education for Intercultural Communication (120 ECTS) prepares students to teach foreign languages to children. Special emphasis is laid on early age intercultural communication competence. The overall number of available study places is 10.

The general strength of the programme is generated by its didactics and methodology relying upon a balanced combination of theory and practice to be used in a future work as a teacher or educator. The programme facilitates gaining a multicultural view on educational issues and sharing personal/collective experience in intercultural settings. The programme prepares its students to effectively tackle challenges and possibilities arising from the globalisation, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity. The curriculum is composed of the following three study modules: ORIENTATION STUDIES (6 ECTS) This section includes introductory courses that provide students with skills needed for starting his/her studies in the University of Eastern Finland and this particular programme. MAJOR STUDIES (90 ECTS) Major Studies include methodological studies, as well as research planning seminars. This module includes as well courses focusing on international professional communication. The content studies are oriented towards theory and practice of teaching foreign languages to young learners, current pedagogical and educational issues, innovative pedagogical solutions, as well as teaching and professional practice. Master in Learning, Teaching and Counselling in Intercultural Context

Global focus on diverse disciplines related to education and pedagogy. Students may choose a thematic module according to their interests on adult, primary or science education. In addition, they may take courses in areas of special interest, such as, special/inclusive education. [+]

Master's Degree Programme in Learning, Teaching and Counselling in Intercultural Context consists of altogether 120 ECTS divided into orientation studies and content studies related adult education and counseling, as well as primary education, special (inclusive) education and education of science. The thematic modules can be flexibly chosen by students according to their personal interests and needs. The curriculum of the programme has a global focus and is not limited to one particular research or study field related to education. Instead it offers a thematical walkthrough through diverse disciplines related to education and pedagogy.

Master in Linguistic Sciences

This Master’s degree programme (MDP), taught entirely in English, seeks to provide an opportunity to study language, linguistics, language technology and translation from a variety of perspectives. The degree consists of coursework, workshops, book examinations, seminars and a research thesis (MA thesis). The programme consists of three thematic sub-programmes with overlapping basic components followed by field-specific special training. These sub-programmes are:
