Welcome to the University of Nicosia, a modern and innovative university, guided by its enduring motto, “Excellence in Education”.
Located on the island of Cyprus, in Europe, the University of Nicosia is committed to inclusive access to higher education, providing an equal-opportunity, open education system that extends its educational boundaries to the most remote places of the world. To this end, the University offers more than 100 conventional face-to-face and distance-learning programmes at the Bachelor, Master and Doctorate level; hosting more than 7,500 students from all over the world. Our state-of-the-art premises, and our innovative e-learning platform that provides access to extensive on-line learning resources, help foster a multicultural learning environment that promotes cooperation, friendship and understanding.
Being an entrepreneurial digital university, we respond to, and shape the needs of, the knowledge-based society we live in. Both our core educational services (delivery of learning) and our administrative support operations employ advanced Information Communication Technology; we thus provide a fully digital educational environment that promotes teaching and learning innovation, inspired by technology and driven by pedagogy. Teaching and learning is, therefore, the focus of our work, and our students are always at the centre of our attention. In line with this, we facilitate a student-centred learning environment that promotes active self-learning and imparts life-long learning skills and competences to our students.
Our high quality and dynamic international teaching and research staff brings innovative knowledge into the classroom, emanating from significant European and locally-funded research projects, as well as through extensive collaborations with local and international industries. The U-Mulitrank university ranking system places us high in the clusters of Teaching/Learning; Internationalization; and Engagement with Society.
Our strong commitment to implementing the “knowledge triangle” through the active engagement of our University with research centres, industry and society, ensures that all our programmes are designed, developed and enhanced in close collaboration with industry stakeholders and relevant professional associations. This results in programmes that meet industry needs and are accredited by all relevant professional bodies. Our alumni statistics are indicative of the high employability of our graduates, both in Cyprus and abroad.
We offer you an academically stimulating environment, and we are confident that your studies with us will meet your intellectual queries, inspire your aspirations, and positively shape your future career. We are also certain that your student life at the University of Nicosia, in Cyprus, will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

University of Nicosia Digital Currency Initiative
The University of Nicosia becomes the first accredited university in the world to accept Bitcoin payments, launches an MSc Degree in Digital Currency and proposes initiation of a Comprehensive Framework for developing Cyprus into a hub for Bitcoin trading, processing and banking.
The University of Nicosia, the largest private university in Cyprus and one of the largest English language universities in the Mediterranean region, is the first accredited University in the world to accept Bitcoin for payment of tuition and other fees.
Additionally, UNic launched in Spring 2014 the first MSc program in Digital Currency in an online format addressed to students worldwide. As part of this path breaking initiative, UNic is proposing to the Cyprus Government and the relevant stakeholders that Cyprus initiate the creation of a Comprehensive Framework for developing Cyprus into a hub for Bitcoin trading, processing and banking.
The University of Nicosia aspires to be a leading contributor to excellence in education and research.
To help students become educated individuals, achieve their academic and professional goals and assume responsible roles in a changing world of European cooperation and global interdependence; to promote research and the generation of knowledge; to be of service to society through the dissemination and application of knowledge, as well as through innovative partnerships with business and civic society institutions.
Statement of Values
To foster within the University community the values of personal and academic integrity; the liberty to question and to pursue knowledge; of respect for the laws of the Republic of Cyprus, the European Union and the University; democratic governance and management of the institution; respect for persons; professionalism and diligence; ethical behaviour; civic responsibility; multi-cultural awareness; tolerance; sustainability of resources; entrepreneurship and innovation; personalised attention and student focus.
The promotion of science, knowledge, learning and education, through teaching and research for the benefit of society;
The cultivation, transmission, application and inter-disciplinary exchange of knowledge, and
The provision of high quality undergraduate and graduate education that is internationally recognized, and of other programmes of study, which are of an international standard.
The University gives top priority to providing students with academic and professional skills such as:
(a) to become educated individuals and develop critical skills and communication abilities, achieved through liberal arts and general electives. Evidence for this is their work while at University, including critical essays, assignments, individual and group projects, presentations internships, educational trips etc; plus the various distinctions/prizes, awards earned by our students through their participation in numerous conferences, community activities, and so on; and
(b) to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for their profession, instilled through specialized courses which the relevant professions require before graduates can practise. Evidence of this being achieved is the approval of our programmes by various professional bodies such as the Legal Council of Cyprus in Law, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, ETEK in Architecture, Computer Science and Engineering and the ACCA and ICAEW in Accounting (through the maximum exemptions allowed). With these academic and professional skills, the University of Nicosia graduates are able to succeed both at a regional-European level as well at a global level.
Focus on Research
Another important priority is research and the generation of knowledge especially in an applied manner and of benefit to the economy and society. Realizing that it does not have the resources to be a top research university, the University of Nicosia emphasizes the generation of knowledge which is primarily focused on Cyprus and the region and is more applied in nature.
Contribution to Society
The third priority is service to society and innovative partnerships with other institutions. This is illustrated by the innumerable academic and public service activities such as the Citizen’s Free University, international conferences, seminars, lectures to inmates and the public presence of our faculty in the media for current affairs.
Making Cyprus an International Education Centre
The University of Nicosia also tries to contribute as much as possible to the national goal of making Cyprus a regional and international education centre; for instance partnership with St. George’s University of London which recruits mainly in the UK and has some European but no international students: this institution’s high reputation and high entrance criteria for its entrants is already attracting top quality students from the USA, Canada, Israel and other countries for the first time.
The University of Nicosia’s roots date back to 1980 and it’s predecessor institution, Intercollege.
Starting out small, in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, Intercollege initially prepared students to successfully pass external exams of professional education bodies, while soon after it began offering its own programmes of study. In a matter of a few years, the college had greatly expanded its operations, adding two campuses in the other two major cities, developing into "the largest and most reputable college in Cyprus" (according to repeated opinion surveys by independent research companies).
The University of Nicosia emerged in 2007, following changes in the relevant local legislation and a comprehensive accreditation process. Through its four schools, the University offers a diverse range of academic programmes of study, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees). Intercollege remains an associate institution, complementing the University’s study offerings through its vocational and shorter duration programmes, and through a variety of joint programmes in partnership with UK universities.
The Leading Private University in Cyprus
Today, the University of Nicosia is the leading independent university in Cyprus; the result of solid and systematic work by all, administration, faculty and staff, as well as, the total contribution of the institution to tertiary education, not only in Cyprus but also in the region. It is the culmination of an ongoing journey, which began over 30 years ago, and has established the University as a leading tertiary education provider in Cyprus – in line with the enduring motto of the institution: “Excellence in Education”.
