The Faculty of Science is very diverse. Researchers within the faculty focus on the study of the smallest and the largest in the universe, the living and non-living matter, seeking knowledge on the most fundamental level or developing high-tech applications. Therefore we provide education and research at a high international level, with science and technology directed towards the needs of the society. Next to this we offer courses and programmes in all traditional fields, but also in many more specialised disciplines.

Education

Through active cooperation agreements we welcome approximately 120 exchange students every year and this number is still increasing. Most exchange students come from European countries. A lot of these students take part in research work in the laboratories of the faculty. We also accept about 150 regular international students from all over the world in our bachelor, master, postgraduate and PhD programmes.

We are proud to be attentive to the needs of our foreign students, offering guidance on all levels.

Research

The Faculty of Sciences contributes to the development of science and the growth of knowledge in Flanders and the world. The faculty invests in research that meets the international quality standards. In our 13 departments with their accompanying research groups we offer young researchers a stimulating research environment. Every research group has identified a number of research fields. The topics of the research fields span a broad spectrum.

Nematodes or roundworms are everywhere. They are among the most harmful organisms of crops, especially in the tropics, but on the other hand, some species are natural antagonists that can be used in bio-control programs against pest insects. Because of their ubiquitous presence, overwhelming densities and diversity (sometimes compared to insects) the free-living nematodes are an ideal tool for biodiversity studies. They are used as bioindicators of pollution in both terrestrial and aquatic environments.

The International Master in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea), is a joint Master’s program organized by ten leading European universities in the field of marine sciences; Ghent University (BE), Sorbonne Université (FR), University of the Algarve (PT), University of Oviedo (ES), Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (IE), University of the Basque Country (ES), Polytechnic University of Marche (IT), University of Bergen (NO) and Université de Bretagne Occidentale (FR), Université Côte d'Azur (FR). It is supported by fourteen Marine Research Institutes belonging to the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC).

Course structure

IMBRSea is a two-year, 120 ECTS study program that starts with the first semester of courses within the fundamental modules in which students gain the core competencies required for starting any of the five specialization tracks of the program. This first semester is offered by Ghent University, University of the Algarve, Université de Bretagne Occidentale and the University of Oviedo. The program also has a social aim: to apply research and knowledge in favor of humanity and society.
