Ghent University, abbreviated to UGent, is one of the major universities in the Dutch-speaking region of Europe. It distinguishes itself as a socially committed and pluralistic university in a broad international perspective.
The faculty of Economics and Business Administration boasts a dynamic team of about 270 employees offering theoretically founded, high-quality and socially relevant education, research and scientific services to the community in the fields of economics, business economics and business engineering based on our Mission Statement.
In our faculty we offer education to some 2500 full-time students but we also offer education in other faculties of Ghent University and in the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School.
Although the origin of the first economics courses at Ghent University dates back to the 19th century, our faculty in its current form has existed for only 10 years. It was founded in 1998 after the merger of the Faculty of Economics and the Management School.
In those ten years, we have come a long way and today our faculty is home to a dynamic group of 270 members of staff who, in line with our mission statement, provide theoretically grounded, high-quality and socially relevant teaching to some 2600 full-time students in our own faculty and to many students in other Ghent University faculties and the Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. We offer bachelor and master programmes in economics, applied economics, business engineering, general economics and business economics (including an option in government management). Our advanced English-language master programmes in Banking and Finance and in Marketing Analysis cater to a large international audience.
We believe there’s clear added value for students who get their training in a research-oriented environment. In addition, we aim to contribute to the growth of a Flemish knowledge economy. That’s why we have strongly invested in research which meets international quality standards. Today, our departments and research centres offer a stimulating environment to our young scholars.
Our faculty is opened up to the world outside. Professors and researchers take up their social responsibilities by participating in the public debate, by sitting on advisory boards and by playing an active role in important national and international organisations and businesses.
We set great store by the international dimension of teaching and research. Our researchers are active in international research networks, they present their work at international conferences and they publish in international journals and book volumes. Every year even larger numbers of our students take part in international exchange programmes involving our 60 partner institutes. At the same time, some 140 foreign students will study at our faculty this year.
