These include a condensed Brief History of SCU from Teachers College to University. We've also included some expanded descriptions of distinct five-year periods describing the University's history over two decades: 1994 – 1998, 1999 – 2003, 2004 – 2008 and 2009 – 2013. Our Vision La Trobe will be a University known for its excellence and innovation in relation to the big issues of our time, and for its enthusiasm to make a difference. La Trobe will be one of the top three Universities in Victoria, one of the top dozen nationally and one of the top 300 internationally. Our Values In 2012, as part of the development of the University's five year strategic plan 'Future Ready' we articulated a set of values. We developed these… [+] values through a consultative process involving many La Trobe staff. The five values guide everything we do. At La Trobe University we: Take a world view Pursue ideas and excellence with energy Treat people with respect and work together Are open, friendly and honest Hold ourselves accountable for making great things happen Values are expressed through behaviours and during the first part of 2013 we will explore how La Trobe staff and students can translate our values into behaviours that generate benefits for the communities we interact with and serve. Our past La Trobe was the third university created for Victoria, and was established to be complementary to, but different from, the other two. Its founders aspired to create a university that would: Provide an accessible alternative to the two pre-existing universities Bring university education to the northern suburbs of Melbourne Excel in a number of selected disciplines Shaped by the era of our birth, La Trobe developed a distinctive ethos which joined ‘social engagement’ to the pursuit of academic excellence. Reflecting our desire to engage with the outside world, our public intellectuals became and remain among the most engaged in the nation, and our alumni are some of the most influential their generations have produced. In the 1980s and ‘90s we redefined the University through new relationships, especially in country Victoria. We are now a multi-campus university and the largest provider of higher education to Victoria’s regions. Moreover we have the largest regional enrolment of the mainland Australian universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities ‘Top 500’. La Trobe University now has some of the world’s best researchers in the sciences and humanities contributing to the achievement of this ranking. La Trobe is a globally recognised university, transforming the lives of its students, many being the first in their family to attend university, and playing an important role in its local communities. These are achievements of which we can be justly proud. Our future Times have changed, and the manner in which we must play our part in the world, as well as the complexity and cost of academic research, have changed with them. For instance, Melbourne’s North is being transformed by population expansion and rising demand for higher education. All the regions we serve face new challenges as a result of structural changes in national and global economies along with environmental and social challenges. Students have greater choice than ever before, and expect a high quality educational experience, together with engaging, relevant and flexible curriculum. The issues facing our society, and to which our courses and research must respond, include climate change, the ageing of our population, the rise of Asia’s relevance and influence, the revolution in the medical sciences, and the resilience of societies in the face of rapid change. Other challenges will arise during the lifespan of this Plan, and La Trobe will be agile in responding to them. Our history equips us with the appropriate formula for success in such an environment. Our geography, ethos and academic strengths can be the starting points for an even livelier and stronger La Trobe that retains its relevance and remains true to its ideals. International activities La Trobe is dedicated to serving the global community through internationalisation, innovative teaching and learning methods, and research. This includes encouraging our students and staff to gain international experience, development of an internationalised curriculum and research programs, and the diversification of our student community. The University's strong international focus is manifested and continually enhanced in several key areas of the University: Teaching an internationally relevant curriculum, which prepares students to be global citizens, entrepreneurs, employers and employees a range of courses and pathways that meet the requirements of the diverse markets in which we operate, and which are delivered onshore in Victoria and Sydney, or offshore with high quality transnational teaching partners high quality academic relationships strong and productive partnerships with pathway providers onshore and offshore Research strong international research partnerships and internationally focused research Community engagement opportunities and support for international students to engage successfully in their University life and in their communities exceptionally strong engagement with employers, industry and with alumni Student mobility opportunities for our students to participate in exchange academic programs overseas and active partnerships with over 150 institutions in more than 40 countries.

The aim of the SSB is to encourage a distinct perspective on social trends in policy, practices, behavior, and regulation. WHAT IS A THINK TANK? “A RESEARCH INSTITUTE …..STAFFED WITH INTERDISCIPLINARY GROUP OF EXPERTS ENGAGED IN THE STUDY OF POLICY ISSUES IN BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT……“ – WWW. BUSINESSDICTIONARY.COM SSB hosts exper… [+] ts in policy, business, and media to explore ideas in an informal and stimulating environment. Our research program “Explore” provides an independent perspective on emerging social and business related trends. The SSB hosts seminars and workshops featuring national and international practitioners, scholars, policy makers, and business leaders. The SSB is also constantly forming close relationships with other think tanks, foundations, and research organisations in Australia and overseas to support the SSB’s student exchange programs. A different perspective The SSB’s expanding network of researchers and collaborative institutions help deliver SSB’s research and study programs. This allows SSB’s courses to give students a global, accessible, relevant, and distinct perspective on domestic and global issues. The School’s research is funded through a diverse base of supporters, sponsors, grants, and ticket sales to the lecture series and funds raised through the School’s study programs “Challenge, Explore, Learn and Lead”. Learning experience standards The Sydney School of Business has implemented the Learning Experience Standards (LES) base on accountability, transparency, relevance, and continuous improvement of every course. LES is part of the School’s culture to encourage a learning experience which is tailored to the student needs. It aligns the learning outcomes of the SSB’s programs with the School’s expectations. The SSB collects data and feedback to improve the student learning experience and performance. The LES is an initiative created by the SSB to enhance student success by continuously introducing innovative ways to improve the student’s learning experience. The LES scheme benefits the students, the reputation of graduates, and the School as a whole. The LES approach means that the courses, the content, and the delivery style equips our graduates with more than just the knowledge. Graduates are given the skills and techniques required to become leaders in the public and private sector. The LES scheme encourages students to be actively engaged in the way the material is delivered, treated, analysed, and applied. This continuous engagement with facilitators, learning mentors, and students means that learning outcomes are also aligned with the learning experience. Continuous development is integral to the SSB’s tailoring of each study program to the needs of students. The one-size-fits-all model is not applied at SSB. The LES also acts as a pre-set benchmark for the outcomes which are achieved. LES allows the School to develop, monitor, evaluate, and revise the content of its programs. About us Our History Since 2005, The Australian Academy of Nursing has provided pathways to the nursing profession. Founded by the private hospital sector and researchers from the healthcare sector, the Academy uses its strong links with the industry to provide training, research, and ongoing professional development to the healthcare and aged care sectors. From 2008 to 2013, through collaboration with the University of Ballarat, AAON successfully delivered the IRON… [+] (Initial Registration for Overseas Nurses) and Bachelor of Nursing courses. AAON provided a pathway for overseas nurses who met the nursing regulatory body’s requirements, the opportunity to integrate into the Australian healthcare system, gain their registration, and live the Australian dream. Our Mission The Australian Academy of Nursing has dedicated itself to forging bonds between academia, industry, and the community. Our commitment to our students is strengthened by our belief that nursing and other aged care professions provide a worthwhile experience as well as an opportunity to care for the vulnerable members of our community. AAON creates ties between graduates, employers, and patients in need through: Providing courses which integrate teaching with research The use of lecturers and trainers who are experienced practitioners in the industry Introducing students to challenges faced in modern hospitals and aged care centres through vocational placement Connecting industry organisations and aged care facilities with the finest graduates of direct-care education The Australian Academy of Nursing provides outstanding clinical facilitation to students in Australian hospitals in order to ensure a smooth transition for overseas qualified nurses and a no-fuss re-entry for locally trained nurses through vocational placement. Using a blend of teaching techniques, the Academy has developed a learning environment, facilities, technology, and content to focus on developing the students’ “thinking and practical skills” such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation, praxis, creative thinking, and problem solving. AAON’s approach to healthcare encourages future clinicians to use the best available evidence and critically apply it to an individual patient’s circumstances and preferences in clinical practice. Courses at AAON Using the Kaizen philosophy of continuous incremental improvements, the Australian Academy of Nursing achieves personalised training of nurses from diverse backgrounds. Our classrooms bring together small, well-coordinated groups of students who have overseas qualifications, local qualifications, and entry level knowledge. These groups are engaged in a dynamic non-traditional learning which integrates classroom teaching, online learning, clinical laboratory sessions, and practical placement in both hospitals and nursing home facilities. Together with our partners, including the Independent Private Hospitals of Australia, AAON presents its students with a unique learning experience and career opportunities. Students are engaged in direct contact with active researchers, practitioners, instructors, and with the daily, operational situations commonly experienced in patient care facilities. The Academy offers a truly professional learning and research environment where students are treated as equals. We accept only a limited number of students each intake to ensure students receive the attention and assistance they need to succeed in their studies. Our staff are experienced practitioners in the health care community, and our programs are designed according to evidence-based practice. The Kaizen Philosophy In 2005, when AAON was established, the founding board decided to adopt a new approach to nurse training education and research, the “Kaizen Philosophy”. This philosophy originates from Japan and is the basis of the “Japanese economic miracle” since 1945. Kaizen strives on the ideals of mutual respect, equality, fairness, transparency, and accountability. It assumes all are equal stakeholders when it comes to the care of others. The Kaizen Philosophy is about continuous incremental improvements in everything we do. This is driven by all within the organisation, regardless of who they are, their background, and what they do. There is no “them and us” culture between academics and students. The Australian Academy of Nursing has applied Kaizen to engage students to become stakeholders in developing the quality of their experience during their study, not after they have completed their qualification. The AAON culture encourages small continuous changes on a regular basis and rejects the idea that we should respond solely to “problems”. On the contrary, AAON believes there are only options to situations, and it is the duty of all to act towards finding the path for a desired outcome. We reject excuses, seek solutions, and constantly ask “why?” Together with our partners, including the Independent Private Hospitals of Australia, AAON presents its students with a unique learning experience and career opportunities based on this philosophy. Importantly, there are no stupid questions as all members of AAON are equal and have something to contribute. This action-based culture means that every team and individual is developing and implementing their own solutions every day. It means that no one person or team will have all the answers. Improvement is the goal and responsibility of every member of AAON in every activity. It’s the small but continual efforts of every member of AAON, teacher or student, that lead to changes for the better in everything we do. The standards we set for our researchers, lecturers, and students have been distilled from our peers, the healthcare sector, and are also driven by the members of the Academy. Rank and titles are not relevant when it comes to contributing to and driving continuous improvement. The philosophy is less about “what could have we done “ and more about “what was done”. It is much more about how we affect the present. That is why all our teaching material is designed to engage the student to bring changes to everything we do. This makes AAON a unique research and education organisation. Teaching hospitals AAON teaching hospitals provide clinical education and training. These teaching hospitals are located in both Sydney and Melbourne. Most programs at AAON feature placement and training arrangements at a number of medical centres in regional and metropolitan areas. Some of AAON’s partnerships create vocational placement and training opportunities at hospitals such as Sydney Private Hospital, Holroyd Private Hospital, and Longueville Private Hospital. AAON invites private and public hospitals, aged care providers, and other aged care establishments to join our teaching hospital/internship network.
