In management theory, the idea still prevails that people can be “operated” like machines. What nonsense! You need to understand what makes people tick, how they influence and are influenced by their environment, and how society as a whole is developing in order to be successful in what you do. As an aspiring young person at the Karls, you should be trained for management and leadership functions in companies. But you should also take on the responsibility that comes with this in society. With this qualification, you will understand, accompany and actively shape social and cultural change, no matter what role you want to take on in your professional life.

The PreMaster at the Karls is a two-semester part-time preparatory course in English, which is offered every winter semester. In the PreMaster’s program, you will take various modules to acquire the relevant basics in the areas of business management, economics, scientific work and other subject areas that you need to be well prepared and successful in our Master’s programs, which also start every year in the winter semester.

Our Master program in Management program provides you with the structure (theory), performance (practice), transformation (leadership) and research (synthesis) of management in an interdisciplinary way: (re-)thinking management. And why choose between being a generalist or a specialist? Building on the pillars of general management and personal development you choose two areas of specialization.

Digitalization is not just a technological development – in digital media, people communicate faster and more networked, new types of social structures are formed and a completely new culture is established. This specialization is initially concerned with understanding this digital culture: How do technological structures, platform economic logics and communicative practices interact? What strategies do the individual actors pursue, what are the dynamics of public discourse, how do phenomena such as fandom and hate speech come about? How are the relationships between private and public reconfiguring themselves?

An integral understanding and holistic practice of sustainability go far beyond “green” lifestyles or short-lived hypes. Sustainability combines ecology, geographies, cities, architecture, technologies and politics, and therefore also social and cultural values. Based on sustainability as an integral approach that combines ecological, economic, social and cultural aspects, you will reassess the meaning of prosperity in relation to the “limits to growth”. You apply concepts such as “green growth”, “degrowth” and “postgrowth”.
