The M.Sc. in Geological and Environmental Studies Program at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is a research degree with a thesis, designed to impart research skills and professional competence in a variety of fields in geology and environmental science. The study program is subject to rules and regulations set by the Faculty of Natural Sciences, including awarding of credit points and eligibility for scholarships and teaching assistantships.

Geology plays a crucial role in addressing global environmental and industrial challenges. The Applied Geoscience programme is designed for international students seeking a comprehensive education in geosciences with a focus on practical applications. Spanning two years (four semesters), this programme equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to tackle issues related to mineral resources, environmental protection, hydrogeology, and geological engineering. The curriculum is structured to gradually build expertise, starting with foundational programmes and advancing towards specialised topics, culminating in an independent MSc thesis project in the final semester.

The program provides advanced training in geology, applicable to geological problem-solving. Our graduates have a solid foundation of knowledge in the different core disciplines of geology sciences (mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, and paleontology), complemented with advanced skills through specialized studies in selected areas. The field component includes a three-week geological mapping field school.

The Geology programme is designed to prepare highly qualified universal professionals, whose intellectual and practical skills match the requirements of modern geosciences and knowledge-based technologies. The graduates will be able: to demonstrate and apply a comprehensive geological knowledge and understanding, and to effectively apply it in scientific investigations and practical activities.

The Master in Mining and Geological Engineering provides solid training in mining and exploration techniques in the current framework of the digital transformation of the mining industry, based on the best practices of environmental sustainability, safety, smart mining, automation, and robotics. The role of a Mining and Geological Engineer involves exploration, development, and mining management, but also support for construction works, namely tunnels and other excavations in rock masses.

Built on existing strong minerals exploration MSc programs, TIMREX is a joint master’s degree in mineral exploration with add-on innovation and entrepreneurship skills. The program has a strong emphasis on field activities and the application of innovative exploration techniques and solutions is the specialty of TIMREX among the EIT-Labelled master programs. Intensive fieldwork is expected from the students during the summer period between the first and second years of study. Students will develop their entrepreneurship, innovative and socio-civic skills, with strong support from industrial and research partners.

Master in Water and Geological Risk Engineering Floods, storms, and landslides affect billions of people globally and, in a changing climate, water-induced hazards will continue to be a critical challenge for our society. This Master’s degree program aims to form new global leaders in hydrological, geological, and climate science and technology. Faculty from three Departments, ranking 26th in the world in Water Resources Research, provide interdisciplinary background and strong theoretical preparation.

The M.Sc. Geophysics is a research-oriented program that offers individual specialisation. Students can choose those lectures from the curriculum of the Institute of Geophysics that best suit their scientific interests.

International Master Program in Mineral Resources and Sustainable Mining provides master’s degrees in two fields: MSc in Geosciences and MSc (Tech) in Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing. Graduating students will profoundly understand the engineering, geological, geophysical, financial, regulatory, environmental and social aspects of sustainable mining within the whole mining industry value chain.

The EMerald master‘s program was created to answer the urgent need expressed by the European Union to create a resource-efficient Europe. As the EU recognised the importance of mineral and metal resources in our modern economy, it also realised that the raw materials industries were facing a critical skills shortage.

Unique in the country, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics originates in three faculties geologically and geophysically organized after the Education Reform in 1948. Today the traditions of Romanian geology continue to a high level of scientific and didactic approach, on the background of modernization and permanent updating.

The Applied geology in the master’s study is a technically oriented geological field of study that to a necessary extent ensures all the geological research and survey activities. The study is focused mainly on the education of experts in the areas of hydrogeology, engineering geology, technical mineralogy and petrography, environmental geochemistry, deposit geology and applied geophysics.

This unique and forward-looking MSc is designed to provide you with a solid grounding in key modern principles and methods required for a career in applied geology in our changing world. The course is taught by experts from diverse geoscience disciplines, including pure and applied geology, geophysics, geomodelling and computational geoscience, with experience in the minerals and geo-energy sectors. It focuses on generic aspects of data interpretation, analysis and computer modelling of the deeper and shallow subsurface using real-world data and leading industry software (e.g., Petrel, Leapfrog, ArcGIS).
