The MA in African Studies is a year-and-a-half-long Program (three semesters). The first year is dedicated to formal study and coursework at BGU. Students must finish their required and electives classes over the course of two semesters during this first year. During the third semester, students must spend a minimum of three months on a local project in Africa.

The research master's in African Studies at Leiden University is unique in continental Europe for the interdisciplinary range of subjects offered and the long-term fieldwork in Africa. Small classes ensure that you have plenty of direct contact with your lecturers and a high level of guidance and support throughout your studies.

On the MPhil/PhD African Studies supervision is provided for research leading to MPhil and PhD degrees within the broad general area of African studies. Research topics such as the study of a language (from a descriptive, comparative, philological or textual point of view), of literature (whether author-based, thematic or comparative), or of any of the performing arts, which falls within our own core expertise, are supervised entirely in the African Languages, Cultures and Literatures Department. However, there is great potential for extending the range of topics by means of joint supervision with colleagues from other departments and centres.

The MA Coursework program consists of two-course work modules (one offered in the first semester and one in the second semester), and a minor dissertation. The course work modules have a weighting of 45 credits each.

Three modules counting 30 credits each (at least one of these modules must be completed during the first year of registration).

The graduate program of the Department of Africana Studies provides students with critical exposure to the multidisciplinary study of people and cultures of African descent in the United States, Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Europe. The program provides a balance of a foundation and multidisciplinary research methods in Africana studies. The M.A. degree offers advanced study in the four pillars of the department: Pan African consciousness, public humanities, gender and sexuality studies, and visual and material culture.

The M.A. program in African Studies allows students to engage in interdisciplinary study and intensive research on Africa from a wide range of disciplines, including fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and professional fields. A joint degree program with the School of Public Health is available to students interested in pursuing M.A. and M.Ph. degrees concurrently.

Master's Degree in International Relations and Development Cooperation (RICS) trains participants to become professionals with multidisciplinary skills and high-level operational and analytical skills to work in international, government and non-government organizations, European institutions, Public Administrations and agencies that operate within the national territory and private businesses active in the international markets.

The MPhil in African Studies offers a taught course with a substantial research component and provides an excellent foundation for students wanting to develop their knowledge of Africa.
