Introduction
Gain skills and conceptual understanding that prepare you for a professional or academic future in Artificial Intelligence, with a Master’s degree from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
You’ll be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of concepts and techniques behind Artificial Intelligence. You’ll acquire skills to build AI tools with a wide range of applications and the potential to solve real-world problems across sectors like education, logistics, business, and the web.
Duration and Workload
The Master of Artificial Intelligence can typically be completed in 12 to 16 months of full-time study, or in up to two years part-time.
Most students will need to start their course of study in Trimester 1, which begins in February. If you have prior knowledge of the field, you may be able to start in Trimester 2—talk to the programme director to discuss your options.
If you are studying full-time, you can expect a workload of 40 to 45 hours a week for much of the year. Part-time students doing two courses per trimester will need to do around 20 to 25 hours of work a week. Make sure you take this into account if you are working.

How You’ll Study
The Master of Artificial Intelligence is a two-part qualification with components of both coursework and research.
Part 1
In Part 1 you’ll take courses looking at topics that range from big data to natural language processing. Your course of study will include a core course that will introduce you to the ethical considerations behind Artificial Intelligence.
You can also choose to include courses in Data Science and Statistics, Network Engineering, Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering, or Software Engineering.
Part 2
In Part 2 you’ll undertake a research essay and a supervised research project in an advanced area of Artificial Intelligence.
