Introduction

The University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland, www.uwm.edu.pl/en) and the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg (Germany, www.hs-offenburg.de/en/) invite you to apply for a Master’s program in Biotechnology. After completing three semesters, students earn a “double MSc” and are awarded certificates from both universities.

The program takes three semesters to complete: the first semester at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the second semester at the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, and the third semester (Master thesis) is conducted either at one of the participating universities or externally at a suitable company or research institution.

This program focuses on problems related to the use of biotechnology in engineering and environmental protection, as well as in the bioeconomy, including the recovery of bioproducts and energy from waste materials. The program provides microbiological knowledge on the basics of biotechnological processes in environmental engineering and presents the possibilities of biotechnology transfer from a laboratory scale to a technical scale. Students will have the opportunity to develop soft skills and creative thinking. They will learn about trends, perspectives, and limitations, including ethical ones, of a biotechnology-based economy.

Graduates of the M.B.T. specialization are prepared to work with modern biotechnologies related to engineering and environmental protection, and bioenergy production. The most important assets of graduates of the Master’s program in Biotechnology are wide theoretical and practical knowledge of modern biotechnologies, and research methods, including molecular ones, and the ability to work individually and in an international team. M.B.T. graduates can find employment in international corporations dealing with biotechnology in engineering and environmental protection, industry, biogas production, biorefineries, in state and local government administration bodies operating in the bioeconomy, in research institutes, or continue their education in Ph.D. studies.

Feedback from the graduates

Studying at an international specialty Biotechnology (MBT) was the best possible decision. A lot of knowledge, getting rid of the language barrier, opening up to other cultures, and making new friendships for life - are just a few of the many benefits. In addition, a double diploma, thanks to which I enjoyed working in an international company almost immediately after graduation. A great adventure that cannot be compared to ordinary university life. I recommend it to all who still hesitate if it's worth it!

Dorota Mierzejewska

The field of Environmental Engineering with a specialization in Biotechnology is the right choice for people who do not like boredom. During your studies, you have a great opportunity to get to know the cultures of the world and after graduation, you have a chance to stand out among other applicants while looking for a job. Thanks to this decision, I have new friends as well as a unique experience of living and studying abroad, not to mention a significant improvement in my language skills. Teachers were helpful and had an enormous knowledge that they willingly share.
Studying in Germany is also another form of education that translates to a greater amount of free time during the semester that you can spend on visiting Western capitals, and when there is a better time than now? ;) I highly recommend and encourage you to choose Biotechnology.
