The master's degree in Biodiversity, Conservation, and Environmental Quality (BCEQ), entirely taught in English, prepares the highly qualified figure of environmental biologist expert in the multiple aspects of biodiversity, aimed at nature conservation and the assessment of environmental quality.

The BCEQ graduate therefore deals with the analysis and protection of biodiversity, environmental monitoring, research, scientific dissemination, and education, thus meeting the national and international demand for experts in biodiversity.

Graduates in BCEQ can continue their studies by accessing a PhD program and can take the state exam for Biologists.

Graduates in BCEQ find their natural place within bodies for the environment and biodiversity, institutions and laboratories for analysis and research, local authorities, cooperatives, consortia for the management of museums, parks, protected areas, and nature reserves, and as freelance biologists.

Candidates are required to hold a three-year degree (B.A.)

Students who wish to enroll in the first year of the second cycle degree in Biology must have, in addition to the curricular requirements stated in the academic regulations of the course, adequate preparation in matters fundamental to the preparation of the Biologist, such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Computer Science and in basic biological disciplines that provide the essential knowledge about the morphological, functional and structural organization of living beings. They must also know the biochemical, molecular, and cellular mechanisms regulating inheritance, reproduction, and development. In particular, they must document the previous acquisition of sufficient knowledge in the following scientific disciplines: Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cytology and Histology, Developmental Biology, Microbiology, General Physiology, Genetics, Pharmacology

You will be notified about acceptance approximately one month after the application deadline.

The entry qualification documents are accepted in the following languages: English / Italian.

Often you can get a suitable transcript from your school. If this is not the case, you will need official translations along with verified copies of the original.

Procedures at the Italian Diplomatic Representatives

Non-EU citizens
Non-EU citizens are invited to contact the Italian Diplomatic Representation of their countries as soon as possible to obtain all the required documents for pre-enrollment at the University of Siena and information regarding the VISA process.

EU citizens – Non-EU citizens with regular permits to stay – Italians with degrees obtained abroad
They must contact the appropriate Italian Diplomatic Representative to obtain all the documents required for enrollment in the University of Siena.

Applications are accepted from the following territories (based on citizenship): World.

To take the MSc courses, students must have adequate knowledge of the English language, at a minimum B2 level, as established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students can demonstrate the required knowledge level either through an approved international certification (see the list) of international certifications recognized by the University of Siena), or by passing a B2 level exam at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA).

After enrolment in Siena, students having an international certification must present it to the CLA office.

For students who are obliged to pass the B2 exam, the University of Siena offers B2-level courses. Dates of the exams and timetables of the courses are reported on the CLA website. The timetable of the English courses is also included in the MSc courses timetable.

Students are strongly encouraged to pass the B2 exam as soon as possible, to be able to fruitfully take the MSc courses.

A motivation letter must be added to your application.

 Find the right program (you can choose up to two programs).

 Click on “Become an applicant” to start your application. Shortly after you will receive your access code via email.

 Create your application package (as required by the specific program of your choice).

 Wait for the response to your application. After you have applied, an Enrolment Committee will assess your background and skills against the requirements of the degree programs you have chosen.

You will be notified about acceptance within approximately one month of the closing date of the intake. In case of a large number of applications, students who will pass the selection based on the submitted documents should be invited to take part in a remote written test, possibly followed by an interview. The dates of the remote written test will be communicated to the admitted students at the email address used for the application.

Do not sign up more than once by using different email addresses, otherwise, your applications will be rejected straight away!

On your online application, there are two buttons at the bottom: “SAVE” and “SUBMIT”. If you have not yet all the documents (except for language certifications) required for completing your online application, do NOT submit it!
