Introduction
The M.A.T. with Art Education program prepares art education professionals with skills and understanding to teach art in K-12 School settings. Our online program provides students with a supportive community and offers coursework in current educational theories, practice, and research along with hands-on experiences in teaching.
The M.A.T. the program focuses on preparing art educators to be reflective educators through direct engagement and understanding how to nurture the art making of others while recognizing their own artistry.
The M.A.T program is a 30-credit hour program that offers students graduate education and art education courses, internships and student teaching, service-learning opportunities, and independent studio work. All M.A.T. students are required to take the Praxis: Art Content Area and Analysis exam and develop an Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) portfolio during their internship semester.
The program is approved by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (DPI) for art teacher certification in grades K-12. It also coincides with DPI and National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) competencies currently required for K-12 licensure. North Carolina has reciprocity agreements with 45 other states, allowing for easy transfer of teaching license.
