Master in Applied Geophysics

Unique in the country, the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics originates in three faculties geologically and geophysically organized after the Education Reform in 1948. Today the traditions of Romanian geology continue to a high level of scientific and didactic approach, on the background of modernization and permanent updating.

The current organization of the faculty dates back to 1990 and is characterized by a continuous dynamic, offering graduates career opportunities in industry as well as in the scientific and academic fields.

The academic offer of the faculty contains three bachelor programs, five master and one doctoral programs in modern study areas and a great interest for the global labor market and advanced scientific research: Geological Engineering, Geology and Geophysics.

The scientific research activity is very intense and takes place within nine centers, focusing on fundamental and applied problems of modern geosciences. They carry out research contracts with important institutions and organizations such as UEFISCDI, as well as specialized units such as PROSPECTIONS SA, OMV-PETROM, GEOECOMAR, the "Sabba Ştefănescu" Geodynamics Institute of the Romanian Academy and many others, projects involving both teachers and researchers, as well as numerous students.

Geology, a fundamental field in the broad spectrum of Earth sciences, is indissolubly linked to the applicative part of the collection of specific samples and field data that are subsequently processed, analyzed, modeled and interpreted to clarify crucial aspects of Earth evolution, the accumulation of substances useful minerals, solids and fluids, but also environmental protection. Thus, the specialized geological practice is an essential component in the thorough preparation of the students of the faculty.

Specialist practices in the field of geophysics are carried out in the final years, in the field of field campaigns organized by the Department of Geophysics in cooperation with companies like PROSPECTIONS SA and WEATHERFORD International Eastern Europe. These practices aim at acquiring students the methodologies of acquiring, processing and interpreting general geophysical data, including geophysical methods of industrial character. Among the professional student associations is Bucharest Capital (BSC), a student group with a scientific profile affiliated with the Faculty, with a history of 12 years of activity. Teachers and a large number of students work in research programs with universities and research institutes from advanced geostrategic countries such as Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, England, USA, Italy, Ukraine, Hungary etc.

Graduates of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics can become geologists, geophysicists, geologists, teachers and researchers in university education, researchers in research institutes, researchers in mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry, paleontology, geo-service station specialists, environmental inspectors, experts hydrogeologists, resource and world economics analysts, natural hazard management specialists, museographers, gemologists, etc.
