Introduction
Master of Economics
The Master of Economics (M. Econ) program started in 1994. The objectives of this non-thesis program are:
- to provide students with alternative disciplines so that they can gain mastery in the related field of economics;
- to apply analytical approaches to analyze current economic issues;
- to demonstrate the application of microeconomics and macroeconomics in solving economic problems; and
- to provide awareness of the development and economic issues at the national and international levels.
The program is structured to allow students to complete in three semesters. In the first semester, students are required to take compulsory theory courses. During the following semesters, students may choose elective courses in their chosen areas of specialization.
Admission Requirements
Candidates should have a Bachelor degree with a minimum cumulative grade-point average (CGPA) of 2.500 on a 4-point scale from institutions recognized by UPM. Working experience of at least 5 years in related fields can be considered for candidates with CGPA of less than 2.500. Candidates must have at least a pass in economics and/or quantitative courses at the undergraduate level.
Admission
Intake is twice annually and admission is open at the beginning of the First Semester (September) and Second Semester (February) of each year.
Program Requirements
Credit Hours Requirement
Students are required to complete a total of 40 credit hours of coursework. The total credit hours include program core courses (22 credit hours), compulsory courses (9 credit hours of courses in the area of specialization and 9 credit hours of elective courses): details
Project Paper Requirement
A candidate in the Master of Economics program is required to submit a project paper related to the field of specialization in the two consecutive final semesters. The project paper will be evaluated by examiners appointed by the Faculty.
