The Postgraduate Program in Civil Engineering, at the Master's level, with an area of ​​concentration in Construction Engineering, corresponds to the result of the Evolution Process of the Department of Civil Engineering at UNICAP. The course in question intends to assist professionals in Civil Engineering, Architecture, as well as other areas that have some relationship with Civil Engineering, as long as they present research projects related to the lines that the Program offers, encouraging the development of research in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Brazil.

Meet a repressed demand for Master's courses in Civil Engineering in the North and Northeast regions, especially in the area of ​​Construction Engineering;

meet regional demand for the development of new technologies from governmental institutions, development agencies, and private companies that demand from professionals a more acute critical spirit, as well as more creative and innovative capacity;

prepare teachers for Higher Education and teaching in the areas of Civil Engineering and Architecture;

deepen the training of Civil Engineers, Architects, and related professionals, making them capable of producing scientific and technological knowledge and developing new techniques and processes.

The Catholic University of Pernambuco originated from a combination of efforts undertaken to adhere to an action by the Catholic Church that, especially in the 1940s and 1950s, encouraged the creation of Catholic Colleges and Universities, duly attuned to the ecclesial perspectives for those institutions . The action was concretely assumed, in the case studied, by the members of the Society of Jesus and by its collaborators. The trajectory of UNICAP began with the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters Manoel da Nóbrega, on April 18, 1943, and its formalization as a university took place on September 27, 1951, from the aggregation of pre-existing units. Such a modest origin did not hinder its growth. This article aims to reconstruct primordial aspects of the journey started and, in it, to highlight points that marked its evolution and the commitments it has been assuming with the Recife, Pernambuco, and Northeastern societies, having as analysis bias its performance as a Higher Education Institution and the importance that has been conquering. To write it, the author did a literature review and research in the archives of UNICAP itself, of the Vice-province of Northern Brazil of Companhia de Jesus, and in the State Public Archive. The analysis undertaken allows us to affirm that the Catholic University of Pernambuco was not born of a government decree: it is the result of an educational project by the Church and the Society of Jesus that excited those who dreamed of it, conducted it for seven decades and currently compose it.
