Mission
The University of the Andes is an autonomous, independent and innovative institution that promotes pluralism, tolerance and respect for ideas; seeks academic excellence and provides its students with critical and ethical training to strengthen their awareness of their social and civic responsibilities, as well as their commitment to the environment.
It has students who, in a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and flexible training environment, are the main agent of their educational process. It enables its highly trained teaching staff to develop an outstanding academic and professional life project, for which it supports research activity that contributes to the development of the country and its international projection.
History
Founded on November 16, 1948, by a group of young people led by Mario Laserna Pinzón, the University of the Andes is the first private higher education institution in Colombia of a secular nature and independent of political parties, not defending the interests of any social or economic group.
Precisely, these characteristics made Los Andes a cutting-edge educational project at a historical moment in the country in which private universities had the influence of partisan conflict in their classrooms. In this historical context, the birth of Los Andes was not only due to the desire to give life to another university or to an exclusively educational interest but also to the intention of creating a new country.
Precisely, these characteristics made Los Andes a cutting-edge educational project at a historical moment in the country in which private universities had the influence of partisan conflict in their classrooms. In this historical context, “the birth of Los Andes was not only due to the desire to give life to another university or to an exclusively educational interest but also to the intention of creating a new country.
For the purpose of training and educating new generations to build a new nation,” according to Francisco Pizano de Brigard, former rector of the University.
For this reason, since its founding, the purpose of Los Andes is to offer an education of excellence that contributes to closing the knowledge gap in Colombia with the scientific advances of the world.
With its new vision – later adopted by other Colombian universities – Uniandes began work in 1949 with seven programs, 79 students and 16 professors.
Our symbols
Logosymbol
The graphic symbol of the University summarizes its identity and is its emblem par excellence. Its design is a shield made up of two basic elements: A black tree framed in a shield with a yellow background.
The intention of its creator, the artist Sergio Trujillo Magnenat, was to create something with a level of abstraction that whoever looked at it would discover its meaning for themselves. Now, the University wanted to give a message of renewal by refining its symbol but preserving the essence of the original design. The updated version gives it a more modern, more abstract and at the same time organic feel; In a single stroke, the tree and the shield merge.
Thus, this updated image seeks to reflect the essence of the University: a cutting-edge educational institution, recognized for its excellence, flexibility, commitment and autonomy.
Anthem
The writer Eduardo Carranza wrote the lyrics of the anthem that identifies the University. The music was composed by maestro Luis Antonio Escobar.
At the highest
point of the country,
a blue star shines
at the University of the Andes,
love, honor and youth.
In our
voice the Homeland sings
and a tricolor word
Colombia, Colombia, Colombia
flames in our hearts.
At the highest point of the country,
a blue star shines
at the University of the Andes,
love, honor and youth.
Saint Albert the Great
In addition to the official symbols, students and professors turned the statue of Saint Albert the Great into one of the most representative graphic elements of the University.
Since 1964, when the German government, through the management of the University of Mainz, donated the image of the 13th-century wise man, it became a decorative element and a meeting point for students and teachers.
From the rectory of Rudolf Hommes (1995-1997), an annual festival was established (commemorating the death of who was called Doctor Universales) to pay tribute to this statue known among the Uniandino community as 'El Bobo'.
College Community
The Community is the most important technological relationship project that we develop with schools. The main objective is to have an effective communication channel between you and the Applicant Experience office, managing to offer different functionalities such as the publication of events, and most importantly, the self-management of registrations for them.
Don't miss the opportunity to connect your school to our network to find the activities that we will schedule throughout our calendar, always focusing on supporting the decision-making process that we prepare especially for your students.
