Our Mission

UMa aims to find adequate solutions, within a framework of responsibility, equity and sustainability, which contribute to the development and affirmation of Madeira and the country in a globalized and dynamic world.

The University pursues scientific research activities, promoting the diffusion and social and economic valorization of knowledge and technological innovation. It guarantees human education at the highest level, in its cultural, scientific, artistic, technical, and professional aspects, conducting academic studies to obtain a degree, a Technical Course, and other courses. It seeks to prepare its students for the challenges of global society and lifelong learning by providing them with scientific knowledge, technical competence, and transversal training.

UMa wants its students to be citizens of the world, creative and enterprising, responsible and professional, tolerant and attentive to the environmental, cultural, and human challenges of a society that is intended to be sustainable and equitable. To this end, UMa promotes and supports actions and programs that contribute to the integration of its graduates into professional environments and foster its spirit of initiative and entrepreneurship, as well as the mobility of students and graduates, in particular in the European area of higher education.

In terms of relationship with the rest of the society, UMa collaborates with the community, governing bodies, companies, professional associations and institutions of higher education and research, discovering, disseminating and applying knowledge, graduating company boards and conducting research and development projects and offer of specialized services.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) is an organic unit of the University of Madeira, with scientific and pedagogical autonomy in its scientific domain, consisting of all the disciplinary areas that make up the Arts, Humanities and Psychology.

Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering

The Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering is an organic unit of the University of Madeira, which develops teaching and research activities in the scientific areas of Civil Engineering and Geology, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Interactive Media Design, Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry.

Faculty of Social Sciences

This Faculty wishes to continue to assert itself as an organic unit with its own scientific and methodological identity, recognized nationally and internationally.

Faculty of Life Sciences

The FCV's purpose is to carry out fundamental and applied research activities, oriented towards the development of researchers, as well as the scientific and pedagogical responsibility of the curricular units of the courses, and the scientific areas under its responsibility.

Higher School of Technologies and Management

Since its creation in 2015, the School has maintained a close business relationship, allowing the training offer to be adapted to the needs of organizations and businesses and providing training in a work context.

Higher School of Health

UMa Higher School of Health is made up of people with firm convictions and principles in close harmony with its nature, mission and values.

Student Support Office

Support students in their relationship with the University within the scope of their pedagogical activity, receiving complaints from students, informing students about their rights and directing them to the appropriate structure to resolve their problems, promoting the full integration of students with special educational needs at the University, aiming at equal opportunities, among other responsibilities.

Library

It exercises its competences in the areas of support for information and knowledge construction activities developed at the University, granting access to all fundamental bibliographic resources for the promotion of research, teaching, learning, lifelong education and support for cultural activities.

Social Action Services (SASUMa)

SASUMa's mission is to provide UMa students with quality, fair, supportive, transparent and balanced services and support, with a view to improving conditions for integration and academic success, ensuring equal opportunities in access to and attendance at Higher Education.

Psychology Service

The Psychology Service is aimed at students and the rest of the academic community at UMa and aims to enhance access to resources and services that promote well-being and mental health.

It provides the following services: psychology consultations, academic guidance space, workshops to develop personal, academic and professional skills and activities to promote psychological well-being.

Student Ombudsman

Its mission is to ensure the defense of the legitimate rights and interests of students at the University of Madeira, whose action is developed in conjunction with the Academic Association, the organic units, and the various Bodies and Services of the University, namely with the Pedagogical Councils.

    Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications:

    • A qualification granting access to higher education, defined as any diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority that confirms completion of an educational program and grants the right to apply for and enroll in higher education in the country where it was issued; or
    • A Portuguese secondary education diploma or a legally equivalent qualification.

    The application process varies according to the degree you wish to apply for.

    Required documents (in PDF format):

    • Copy of the identity Card/ Citizen Card/Passport;
    • Curriculum vitae preferably in the Europass format;
    • Copy of the diploma and transcripts of completed courses and grades (or Diploma Supplement);
    • Other documents that the candidate deems useful to demonstrate their qualifications and
      curriculum;
    • For the applicants to the second cycle of studies which confer Portuguese professional qualification for teaching, copy of the programs of the approved course units, so that the jury can count the credits of training in teaching.

    All original documents used in the online application must be presented at international Student Office. Foreign documents used in the application must also include the Hague Apostille or other consular means of certification and authentication.

    International students are not covered by the direct social support provided by the Portuguese government. However, they can benefit from indirect social support, such as access to university residences and cafeterias.

    Nevertheless, the University of Madeira offers a scholarship to international students from countries in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) and Venezuela. This scholarship consists of a reduction in the annual tuition fee (known in Portugal as propina) to match the fee paid by non-international students. In other words, the fee is reduced from €4,000 per academic year to the amount set for other undergraduate students.
