The Federal University of the Valleys of Jequitinhonha and Mucuri (UFVJM) is a public higher education institution linked to the Ministry of Education (MEC), created by Law 11.173, published in the Federal Official Gazette on September 8, 2005. Its history began in September 1953, when the then-governor Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira founded the Faculty of Dentistry of Diamantina (Faod), with the objective of meeting the needs of the large area that is the Jequitinhonha Valley. Before becoming UFVJM, it was the Federal Faculty of Dentistry (Fafeod) and Integrated Federal Colleges of Diamantina (Fafeid). UFVJM has campuses in four cities: Diamantina, Teófilo Otoni, Unaí and Janaúba, covering the mesoregions of Jequitinhonha, Vale do Mucuri, Noroeste and Norte de Minas Gerais.
