Masters in Political Economy – Evening Program

Inspired by Oxford University’s Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) course, UA&P’s Political Economy program seeks to equip students with skills that will enable them to examine society through different lenses–political science, philosophy, economics, history, sociology–and to consider social issues not merely from a local but also from a regional and global perspective.

The Masters in Political Economy Evening Program caters to fresh graduates and young professionals. The program has the following specializations:

Classes are conducted on weekday evenings (6-9 pm) and on Saturdays. Thesis and non-thesis options are available. Like all UA&P students, students in the Masters in Political Economy Evening Program are provided with personal and professional mentoring.

The program is accredited under the K to 12 transition program of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), meaning that faculty and non-teaching staff of universities and colleges can pursue the program under CHED scholarship.

Coursework. Students are encouraged to take as many subjects for their coursework every semester as their schedule permits and as are available, provided they do not exceed the maximum load of twelve (12) units per semester. Coursework can be taken in any order. Non-thesis students must take an additional six (6) units (total of 36 units) to complete their coursework.

Comprehensive exam. Students must finish all coursework before they can be allowed to take the comprehensive examination.

Thesis. Students in the thesis track must pass the comprehensive exam before they can be allowed to enroll for their thesis.

Internship/Policy Paper. Working students will not be required to do an internship, on condition that they have had at least two (2) years’ work experience. They must, however, submit a policy paper. Non-working students and those who lack work experience will be required to do an internship.

Maximum Residency. Maximum residency is four (4) years, inclusive of leaves of absence. Extensions will only be allowed for meritorious reasons and upon application with the Dean.

Degree. Thesis students who complete all their requirements will receive a degree of Master of Arts in Political Economy. Non-thesis students will receive a degree of Master in Political Economy. In either case, the corresponding specialization will be indicated.

Application

Prerequisites. Applicants must preferably have an undergraduate degree in political economy, political science or economics. Students with degrees from other disciplines may be admitted subject to an evaluation of their transcript. They may be required to take prerequisite undergraduate courses.

Qualifications. Applicants must have a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 2.0 in their undergraduate course. Applicants with GWA below 2.0 but not lower than 2.25 may only be admitted on probation.

Application Procedure. Submit two (2) copies of the duly accomplished Application Form to the School of Law and Governance (7th Floor APEC Communications Building) together with one (1) copy of the following attachments:

• Official transcript of records of undergraduate course (original)
• Curriculum vitae
• Photocopy of college diploma
• For non-UA&P graduates: Prospectus showing course descriptions of the undergraduate course
• For foreign applicants: (a) photocopy of passport, (b) photocopy of ACR, (c) current TOEFL or IELTS score, if native language is not English
• Proof of payment of application fee of Php1,500.00 (US$40 for foreign applicants)
