Introduction

About the Faculty of Science and Engineering

Our Faculty has a world-class reputation. Here, women fought for equality. Scientists split the atom. A wartime codebreaker shaped the digital lives we now take for granted. Two researchers brought graphene – the wonder material that is one atom thick, but 200 times stronger than steel – to the world.

With 12,000 students and almost 2,500 staff, we have the expertise to provide a supportive studying environment, collaborative research space and the understanding of how best to meet business needs.

Whatever you're looking for, you'll find it, and more, in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Our Schools

Our Faculty brings together two highly rated Schools and nine Departments, each with a powerful reputation for teaching and research success, combined with a collaborative approach to the broad areas of our expertise.

By concentrating our activity this way, we are able to work together on multidisciplinary research and teaching, while retaining a high level of specialism across our Departments.

School of Engineering

Our School of Engineering will create a myriad of possibilities; for students pursuing skills and understanding, researchers seeking discoveries and businesses building partnerships.

Through dynamic research and teaching, we're developing engineering solutions that will make a difference to society in an ethical and sustainable way.

Science-based engineering is at the heart of what we do, and through collaboration with the School of Natural Sciences, we will support engineers and scientists who are technically strong, analytically innovative and creative.

Making a difference
Sharing the knowledge gained from our research within the Faculty to improve our behaviours and practices, especially in environmental sustainability, enables our staff and students to make a difference in their study and work and generate solutions to society’s challenges.

Our engineering departments

Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science
Chemical engineering concerns the science and technology related to manufacturing products from raw materials in a safe, sustainable, environmentally benign and cost-effective way. As the birthplace of chemical engineering, today we're the UK's largest chemical engineering department.

Department of Computer Science
We're proud to have been the birthplace of computer science, with a number of computing firsts, including the first-ever stored-program computer. Today we continue that heritage - using our leading facilities and high teaching standards to educate the next generation of computer scientists.

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
We've been educating electrical, electronic and mechatronic engineers for more than a century. With strong industry links to global companies, our hands-on courses provide an excellent base for a career in engineering, as well as opportunities for our researchers to strengthen their portfolios.

Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering
With a nearly 200-year history connecting us to Manchester's emergence as the world's first industrial city, we're uniquely placed to offer a robust engineering experience. Our practical courses enable us to nurture employable graduates as well as solve real-world engineering problems with our research.

School of Natural Sciences

We aim to enable excellence in Natural Sciences teaching and research by harnessing the strengths of individuals, disciplines and wider synergies.

Delivering teaching and research activities across our core subjects, we will advance the boundaries of science for the wider benefit of society, inspiring staff and students to promote positive change.

Together with our colleagues in engineering, as well as collaborations across the Faculties of Biology, Medicine and Health, and Humanities, we will achieve success through multidisciplinary learning and research, educating future leaders in the true fundamentals of science.

Making a difference
Sharing the knowledge gained from our research within the Faculty to improve our behaviours and practices, especially in environmental sustainability, enables our staff and students to make a difference in their study and work and generate solutions to society’s challenges.

Our natural sciences departments

Department of Chemistry
Modern chemistry started here, in Manchester, with John Dalton's atomic theory. Today we're one of the largest chemistry departments in the UK, with a distinguished history that helps to inform our current research and excellent teaching.

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences
Earth and environmental sciences are integral to the future of our planet. Our research-led teaching and practical courses enable our students and researchers to hone the skills vital for addressing major challenges facing humanity in the 21st century.

Department of Materials
Material scientists are shaping our world. We offer a true understanding of the science behind fashion, in practical subjects that meet the needs of an ever-changing world.

Department of Mathematics
Manchester has been at the forefront of mathematics for more than a century and we've helped some of the biggest names in the subject during this time. Today our maths community, and the impact it's having, are bigger than ever.

Department of Physics and Astronomy
Our rich history in physics and astronomy, with no fewer than 13 Nobel Prize winners, contributes to our international reputation for teaching excellence and outstanding research. Today our commitment to innovation and to new discovery keeps us at the forefront of the subject.
