Overview
The intensive M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership is a joint venture of Hebrew U's Rothberg International School (RIS) and the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare. As a participant in this program, you’ll be equipped with the skills you need to become a leader in the nonprofit world, with a focus on civil society and social change.
The program offers
Study tours: Tour-based courses are offered in which students visit various Israeli nonprofit organizations and meet with staff and volunteers as well as community boards in Jerusalem. in order to gain a deeper understanding of how nonprofits are run.
Internships: Students complete a mandatory 4-credit professional internship once a week at a nonprofit organization in the Jerusalem or Tel Aviv areas.
Other: Students complete a mandatory Project Workshop course in which they work as a team to develop and launch a community-based nonprofit project of their own. Students also have the option to study Modern Hebrew during the autumn and spring semesters at no extra cost.

Curriculum
You will graduate with the breadth and depth of knowledge needed to pursue a high-level career in nonprofit organizations. Our core and elective courses cover organizational, social, and financial aspects of nonprofit management and leadership.
Structure
During the program, you will attend core and elective courses two days a week and a nonprofit internship eight hours a week over the course of one and a half semesters. Then in the summer semester, you will have five to six weeks of marathon courses (Mon-Thurs, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., with each course lasting four days). You will also collaborate on a supervised team project during your year of study.
Credits
The M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership program consists of 38 total credits over three consecutive semesters.

Additionally, you may choose a limited number of elective courses outside of the program through the School of Social Work. If you have sufficient knowledge of Hebrew, you may take graduate-level courses through the M.A. in Management of Nonprofit and Community Organizations program offered by the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare.
Modern Hebrew
Although not a requirement of the degree, basic knowledge of Modern Hebrew will enrich your experience in Israel. You have the option to enroll in Modern Hebrew courses offered in the autumn and spring semesters. You may also enroll in the Modern Hebrew Summer Ulpan (intensive Hebrew language training) prior to the start of the academic year for an additional fee.
Note: Modern Hebrew courses do not count towards your degree credit requirements.
Thesis
You will not write a thesis in the M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Leadership program.
Internship
You will intern eight hours a week over the course of one and a half semesters with a nonprofit organization to gain hands-on leadership experience. A required internship workshop provides you with space to explore the integration between the conceptual framework of your studies and your internship experience. The internship counts towards degree credit requirements. You may intern within one of the following areas:
- Helping immigrant populations
- Refugees and asylum seekers
- Educational coexistence programs
- Programs to advance coexistence and peace
- Education
- Programs that foster leadership locally and globally
- Programs for people with special abilities
- Environmental programs
- Social issues within Israel
- Global issues

This program prepares students for a diverse range of management positions in the nonprofit sector. Our graduates have gone on to become founders, development directors, and project managers of organizations that help marginalized populations and people with special abilities, museums and educational institutions, municipal governments, Jewish federations, and religious seminaries.
