Introduction

ESF is one of the nation's premier colleges focused on the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies, and building a sustainable future. We work to address the Earth’s most pressing problems — and students come here because they want to be part of the solution.
ESF’s tight-knit community is centered alongside Syracuse University in the heart of Central New York and has a system of properties that broadly represent New York state’s rich ecological diversity for scientific study and instruction.

  • 1,800 undergraduate and 400 graduate students
  • 27 undergraduate programs and 54 graduate areas
  • ESF students can take classes, use library and computing facilities, join clubs, eat in dining halls, and more at Syracuse University.
  • More than 70,000 service hours logged by students annually
  • Intercollegiate athletics — basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, indoor track, timber sports and bass fishing
  • Ranked No. 2 on Princeton Review’s list of “green colleges” and No. 3 on Sierra Magazine’s “Cool Schools” list
  • 20,000 alumni worldwide
  • One day is not enough to celebrate our planet — Earth Week is a seven-day event.
  • 25,000 acres of field stations across New York state Effective Nov. 4, 2020, Joanie Mahoney assumed the Office of the Presidency at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Ms. Mahoney is the first woman to lead SUNY ESF. Ms. Mahoney joined ESF in November 2018 as Chief Operating Officer. In this role, she has served on the senior leadership team where she has been instrumental in the Discovery Challenge process, expansion of ESF as an instrumental partner with government to address pressing issues like climate change and intrusion of invasive species in our waterways, and functions as point person on COVID-19 matters and preparedness. Prior to ESF, Ms. Mahoney served as Onondaga County Executive for 11 years and oversaw all aspects of a county government, which served 460,000 residents. During her tenure as county executive, she earned national recognition for her environmentally friendly stewardship. Before her elective office, Ms. Mahoney worked as an attorney both in private practice with the Harris Beach law firm and for five years as a criminal prosecutor in the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office. Ms. Mahoney received her bachelor of science degree from Syracuse University's School of Management and her juris doctor from SU's College of Law.
