Introduction
The Geology Program offers the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (both thesis and non-thesis options) degrees in Geology. Sul Ross State University, located in the Chihuahuan Desert of mountainous West Texas, is ideal for geologic studies. The campus, surrounded by the Trans-Pecos volcanic field, is only 20 minutes from the famous Paleozoic sedimentary and structural features of the Marathon Basin, the Permian Basin's southern margin, the Glass Mountains, and only two hours from Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park.
Three Geology faculty teach classes and supervise master's research. The university emphasizes outdoor learning in all fields. Graduate teaching and research assistantships are available as well as scholarships. The Geographical Information System (GIS) laboratory is housed on the third floor of the Barton Warnock Science building. The emphasis of GIS classes is to present an interdisciplinary approach for upper-division and graduate GIS studies and faculty research. Other departmental equipment includes the rock and mineral preparation laboratory, rock thin sectioning equipment, new petrographic and binocular microscopes, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and canoes for field work on the Rio Grande.
